    223 Remington Long Range

I have a 6.5 CM Rem 700 already. But, I like the 223 wylde. On the other hand, I’m super happy with this little savage. Yet, the Axis 2 is a bargain rifle. The barrel is probably it’s best feature. The action itself does have shortcomings as they simplified the build to save costs. I would...

223 Wylde! There’s an idea. Get a new barrel with a steeper twist.

Target Sports Announces Priority Purchasing For Prime

I’m probably guilty of spending at least $1500 a year on ammo. But, the ability to save shipping just a handful of boxes at time is the main reason I subscribed. I hate getting a case of ammo just to figure out that I hate it.

Target Sports Announces Priority Purchasing For Prime

I have no regrets. I’ve totally got my money’s worth. I ordered a 5000 rounds of 22lr and 1000 rounds of 223 right before the lock. I should have ordered done cases of 9mm. I ended up getting a Lee loadmaster because I have no other reliable

    Acceptable accuracy

I’ve been guilty of chasing MOA accuracy when it comes to squirreling. But, I’ve noticed that bench accuracy is never realized in the field. Even though my squirreling rifles should be capable of head shots at 50 yards. I rarely attempt it at more that 30. I usually try for the lungs. With...

Target Sports Announces Priority Purchasing For Prime

I haven’t been able to buy ammo there since March. I’ve been considering letting my Prime membership lapse. This is probably an attempt to retain prime subscribers.

    Acceptable accuracy

At 3000 FPS it’s gonna take more than 1/2 a second to reach the target at 500 yards. I wouldn’t care to shoot at an animal with any more lag than that. But, I think you’ll have plenty of energy at that range. Combine that with one of these Hornady ELDX bullets, it’s going to be lights out for...

    223 Remington Long Range

I've been experimenting with a load for my Savage Axis 2 223 Remington to push the limits of the 223 cartridge. I am limited with a 1:9 twist rate. The barrel has a sporter profile, I think Savage was thinking of Varmint or even small deer. Earlier this year, I restocked it with a pillar...

    7.62x39 Hunting Load Development

I had begun by loading 150 grain .308 SSTs. The accuracy was abysmal as the bore diameter of the American 7.62x39 is .310. I immediately understood the appeal of 300 BLK. But, the 7.62x39 is much more attractive in a recreational shooter because of the inexpensive ammo available...

    new 22lr bolt gun

I think I might buy a Savage Mark II for squirreling. I think the still make a 17 HM2. That being said, I there was the an American rifle with the same Cost/Value ratio as a CZ, I would recommend it.

    7.62x39 Hunting Load Development

Thanks. It’s just the stock Ruger American Ranch 7.62x39 with a few accessories. It’s light, which is what I was shooting for. I built up my 308 for long-range and discovered that I didn’t want to hunt with it anymore. The use of 7.62x39 is based on the premise that I’ll only take deer at...

    7.62x39 Hunting Load Development

I'm currently developing a hunting load for my Ruger American Ranch 7.62x39. I got my hands on a couple of boxes of these 0.310 Caliber 123 grain Ballistic Tip Hunting Bullets from Nosler . I loaded up about ten rounds so I could measure velocities. I loaded the bullets over 30 grains...

First Shots - Ruger M77 "Hawkeye" Long Range Target 6.5 PRC

Knowing your numbers and doing your Homework can save you a bit of ammo at the range. But, I've only once hit the 1K target with no compensating for wind. I think the best practice for deer here in NYS is to compute a maximum point-blank zero. This should take out a lot of the guess-work...

First Shots - Ruger M77 "Hawkeye" Long Range Target 6.5 PRC

I was also looking at the RPR. But, this has the same barrel and the M77 Mauser-like action. I like the more traditional laminate stock as well.

First Shots - Ruger M77 "Hawkeye" Long Range Target 6.5 PRC

I’d wait until the ammo supply is better. I experienced nearly immediate buyers remorse when I discovered that ammo and brass is nearly impossible. I had to order brass straight from gunworks for $1.75 a piece. I lucked out getting factory ammo from target-sports, but that source dried up...

First Shots - Ruger M77 "Hawkeye" Long Range Target 6.5 PRC

I have 4 rifles that will shoot to 1000 yards. My first was my Ruger American 308. It took me 6 months tweaking the rifle and loads to hit it. And, it still is shaky in a stiff wind. When I built my Remington 700 6.5 CM. I had it to 1000 yards in the first day. What I learned from the...

First Shots - Ruger M77 "Hawkeye" Long Range Target 6.5 PRC

I took the muzzle velocity from just the first 4 shots. I don't know if that makes 40 fps statistically significant. That way just be luck of the draw.

Savage Axis 2 Compact 243 Winchester

I do same calculations with Cameras. Never spend more of the glass than the body. The Prostaff P3 is an excellent hunting scope and this is still supposed to be a sporting rifle. I might also mention, 1000 yards was with the elevation adjustment maxed out.

Savage Axis 2 Compact 243 Winchester

I can’t spend twice as twice as much on the scope as the rifle. The whole exercise was to build it mostly with accessories I had laying around. The muzzle break was even on sale.

    243

The expensive ELD bullets are only good for bragging at the range. I got Sierra Game King 95 grain bullets for deer. I doubt I’ll need more than 300 yards in NYS. That would be a stretch. The last deer I took was 60 yards.
  30. Kent Goldings

    243

Hornady recommends 1:8 for their heaviest ELD match bullets. But, my Axis 2 243 doesn’t seem to have trouble with the 1:9. I’m real curious about the muzzle velocity. I got 108 grain bullets to go 2864 FPS with a 20 inch barrel. That 26 inch barrel will be speedier. If that gun has a 1:8...

First Shots - Ruger M77 "Hawkeye" Long Range Target 6.5 PRC

Well, I did it. I blew my summer pay on a bonfide target rifle. It is the Ruger Hawkeye LRT in 6.5 PRC. I took it to an undisclosed location and took the first shots with 143 gr. Hornady ELD-X Precision Hunter Ammo. The muzzle velocity was about 3000 fps. The scope is Vortex Diamondback...

Savage Axis 2 Compact 243 Winchester

Savage Axis 2 Compact 243 Winchester

I took the Axis 2 243 to an undisclosed location to test the 108 grain ELD match bullets from Hornady. They did seem to stabilize at about 2800 FPS using 43.5 grains of Superformance. I was able to hit 700 yards pretty dependably. However, it was very windy and the recoil made it hard to see...

Savage Axis 2 Compact 243 Winchester

A few months back, I upgraded the stock of my Savage Axis 2 223 from a Boyd's Lightweight Thumb-hole to a Boyd's AT-ONE thumb-hole. At that time, it entered my mind to build a new sporting rifle around the former stock. I chose the 243 Winchester because of the versatility of that caliber...

    First reloading yield

It’s not the first reload you need to worry about. As long as you’re not a complete dolt and follow directions, reloading is usually safe. However, after about the 10th reloading, subtle errors will begin to tell. For example, if your knocking your shoulders back too much, you’ll start to get...

I’ve been experimenting more with kydex cheek risers. This time it is a Matthews Fabrications riser conformed to the thumb hole stock with a hair dryer. I like this riser more because of the better profile. It is a much more solid rest and easier to adjust. I actually tested it first by...

Winchester 17 gr. V-MAX 17 HMR case head separation.

It not the same model ammo and this ammo is much older. For what I’ve read on the internet (true?), there have been problems with squibbing from older lots of 17 hmr ammo of all brands. That doesn’t mean much because only a few factories made 17hmr in the early days. I suspect I had a...

Winchester 17 gr. V-MAX 17 HMR case head separation.

The support staff at Winchester is operating from home for *cough* reasons. I went back and forth via email. They had me shipped the leftover ammo. My guess is they’ll do an investigation at some point. It may not be resolved for some time.
