I have a Savage Axis 2 in 223. I have shot the thing thousands of times. It has never misfired. Of course, the axis 2 has the different trigger.
BTW, this rifle us crazy accurate for a $300 rifle.
Does it have to be an MSR? You can a get single-shot rifles in a 243, 375 mag, and 44 mag. You can take a whitetail with any of those with forgiving recoil.
If you go with a bolt-gun, a muzzle-brake will mitigate a lot of recoil.
I just used the default settings. I just want ball-park numbers. I’d be surprised if my muzzle velocity was the same as recorded in the app. I can adjust the setting after that. That’s part of the fun.
The second gun was my old reliable Savage Axis 2 223. I can't hit 1000 yards with it. But, it hits everything inside 400 yards.
Don't laugh at the huge muzzle brake. It didn't look that huge in the photos.
I've upgraded my Remington 700 with a Timney 2-stage trigger and a Nikon 4-15x50 BLACK FX1000 MRAD scope. I zeroed it last Tuesday at Davis in Goshen. Today, I stretched its legs. I verified the 100 yard zero for Hornady 147 gr. ELD match with 2 rounds. I dialed in 1000 yards on the...
My most accurate 10/22s have Green Mountain barrels. My Ruger American is accurate with the proper loads, but it is also modified as the photo shows. All my Rugers are modified. Some are minor... others are completely modified.
I think the American is over-built for the original purpose. I got the long-range shooting bug and I bought the magpul stock and Witt Machine break to tame it. But, it's a little heavy and unwieldy in the woods. I'll probably pick up a 30-30 for next year.
I guess I'm a big fan of Ruger rifles. I own five of them. Well, only four if you don't count the ones with the Brownells BR-22R receiver. That gun has only a Ruger trigger and bolt.
The rifles below are my Ruger American 308 Win, Magpul Hunter and a Ruger 10/22 Carbine built from spare parts...
I totally forgot about early bear season. Do you like bear meat. I’ve never tried it. I might take a stab at hunting best one of these days. If only just to teach the bears that people aren’t a safe source of food.
Sadly, I had to toss these ones out. Each of them has several insect bites. The mosquitos down there are pretty bad. I wonder if squirrels can get West Nile virus.
First three of the season. My favorite squirreling spot was put under the management of a private land preserve that doesn't allow small game hunting. So, I've spent much of the last two weeks scouting new locations. Today, I returned to an old standby location that I've avoided because of...

I bet this thing shoots 1000 yards right out of the box. It is basically at RPR that you can hunt with.
I’m calling this Remington 700 Tactical Hunter 6.5 CM.
Remington 700 ADL Tactical w/ 24 inch threaded heavy barrel 6.5 CM
Magpul Hunter 700 Stock
Witt Machine Muzzle Brake
Nikon Prostaff 5 3.5-14x40 BDC Scope
I shot it in the stock ADL configuration last week, but I took it to the range today...
You totally stole my idea. But, a saw one of these Remington 700 ADL rifles with a heavy threaded barrel in 6.5 CM and I decided give it the same treatment.
I’ll post pics when it is finished.
I’ve been able too tweak the load a bit. I seem to get the best results at 44.2 gr of powder.
I took the gun to the range. It was very windy, but 400+ yards never gets old.
I’ve been fighting with my Ruger American 308 for a couple of years now. I’ve tried several loads and even tried an aftermarket stock. But, I couldn’t seem to break the 1 MOA barrier.
I forgot finally broke down and splurged for this Magpul Hunter stock. To inaugurate the new stock, I loaded...
It thought it was great. I mostly appreciated breaking away from the bench. Even hunting can be pretty static.
This workshop contained a lot more practical shooting than your typical trip to the range. I’m used to moving and shooting while hunting. But, this experience was on a whole...
I noticed the instructor was wearing a shemagh. When I woke up, I realized I had 2nd degree burns on my neck from ejected cases. I think I’m going to wear a shemagh from now on.
