In regards to the barrel length, DEC regulation is a maximum of 16" for a pistol. As a result, if you wanted to be extra safe with the "other" you could get a barrel over 16", have a vertical grip, and no stock. Then it's not a pistol by NY DEC definition and not a rifle since it's not designed...
