I took my hunting WAY more seriously than my friends did. I loved being in the woods alone learning. My friends would tromp thru the woods like a herd of elephants, and if they happened to spook up some poor squirrel and shoot it, well they were successful hunters.
I slowly mastered every...
I see squirrels when I'm deer hunting in the rain. They gotta eat. I don't think they're fans of strong sunlight. It snows too much here in the late season for me to bother.
One last word- this might go without saying because normally you'll see and/or hear them starting to stir at the first crack of dawn, and by legal shooting time in good squirrel woods they're busy going on about their normal daily routine but...be patient and let them settle into their routine...
That right there is the golden ticket. Sit in one spot and knock down 2-3 squirrels from your stealth sniper tree before the rest figure out they'd be healthier feeding somewhere else.
Waltz on over and slowly and quietly to pick up your squirrels, and wander down a piece, 100-150 yards and...
Tell ya BD, .410 was never my fave cuz it needs 7-1/2's to get good pattern density on squirrels, and I never got consistent kills on squirrels with them. 6's in a .410 is a mighty thin pattern after 20-25 yards. If you got the discipline to pass up shots outside your sure kill range with 6's go...
If those are your choices I'd use modified for early to mid season and full after the leaves drop.
You can pass and wait on the close-in shots until they wander out farther. They never sit still for long.
You were smart passing up questionable shots with the .22, risky business.
I'm old now...
As a 14 year old kid living in the boonies, gray squirrels was the first hunting I mastered.
Always loved a semi-auto shotgun for that work, from a safety standpoint shooting up into the tree tops. Semi-auto cuz the sound of the shot covered up the sound of the shotgun reloading itself...
Be out there early, real early before the gray of dawn. They're very early risers. Sit against a big tree, and stay very still. If you shoot one, make note of where it fell, but don't move. When you do move, move very slowly. Use as much camo as you safely can.

All the money spent on ammo lately, my wife would prob have a stroke
Edit: .22 cal, gas piston. While we're on the subject.
It's only common sense man. You don't stand around getting briefed on the game plan BETWEEN the house and the vehicles.
And, if you're tall enough to hug the vehicle roof, you're pretty much as golden as it gets.
Right. Not the most powerful cartridge ever invented. For my wife, perfect. She wanted something like my 10/22. And, the odds of her taking a shot beyond 75 yards is about as good as seeing God and winning the lottery on the same day.
I love both my Americans in 7mm-08 and .308 Win. Although I...
My wife has a Mini-Thirty. Loves it. We took the lazy way out, before this crunch bought a good supply of Hornady Black with the 123 gr SST's. Absolutely 100% reliable with them. It's her deer hunting/HD rig.
I often wonder how someone so completely out to lunch got elected. Then, I look at my own state.
