112 year old semi-auto rifle.

A hundred and twelve years ago, in 1907...our great grandparents were first able to buy the rifle pictured. The semi-auto Winchester Model 1907.

This is a gun they could buy from a Sears catalogue and have delivered via US Post. It was/ is a semi-automatic, high powered centerfire rifle, with detachable, high capacity magazine.

About 400,000 semi-automatic rifles were produced before WW2. Civilians had hundreds of thousands of these for 40 years, while US soldiers were still being issued old fashioned bolt action rifles.

The 1907 fired just as fast as an AR15 or AK47 and the bullet (.351 Winchester) was actually larger than those fired by the more modern looking weapons..

The ONLY functional difference between the 1907 and a controversial and much feared AR15 is the modern black plastic stock.

To summarize:

The semi auto, so-called "assault rifle" is 110 years old. It isnt new in any way.

The semi auto rifle was not a weapon of war. The government MADE IT a weapon of war 40 years after civilians had them.

The semi-auto can be safely owned by civilians. The proof is that literally 3 generations of adults owned and used them responsibly and no one ever even noticed.

Want to fix the horror of mass shootings? Fix the things that have changed for the worse in the last 50 years.

Cause the rifle technology in question was here long before this insanity.

If memory serves from an article I read way back, this and a similar rifle was adopted (and possibly marketed at?) law enforcement.

Not to take away from the original point of the thread.

At one time, a Thompson machine gun could be bought of the shelf of the local hardware store.
Things have changed drastically since then, but "gun violence'' has grown. Go figure.....

This is true, but what people forget (not saying you) that same Thompson cost the same as buying 1 maybe even 2 brand new cars off the show room floor

I think both were but thanks Ed because I sure couldn't remember the name of the other rifle I was trying to think of.

I guess my point really is- in an earlier, more civilized age, there wasn't a distinction other than "this is good enough for LEO/military use. So use it to protect you and yours." Or a different public perception, really. Nowadays H&K's "in a world of compromise, some don't" campaign would be grounds for a civil suit against the company.

I mean HK is a whole different monster between US import laws (and those fucking HK over) and German Laws

Yea ....exactly. They weren't that affordable to the average Joe, but even then our gubberment had to make a stink and tried to make it harder to obtain with the $200 tax stamp via NFA '34. Making it almost impossible for average Joe. Didn't even effect the gangsters who made the gun famous.

I have wanted one of these for a long time and have almost nailed a couple on auction but I currently don't have room/time to setup my reloading equipment so the price of new ammo has always made me pause before making the purchase.
