I recall the shortest barrel you can own for a shotgun is 18 inches, and for a rifle 16 inches.

By both federal and state definitions, it's not a shotgun because it's not designed to be fired from the shoulder. It comes from the factory with a bird's head grip, not a stock and is over 26 inches. It doesn't meet the definition of a pistol either because it doesn't have a rifled barrel and has no forward vertical grip so it's not an NFA AOW.

Please read code 265 of the NY law. It says a "firearm" is a pistol or revolver, a rifle with a barrel shorter than 16" and a shotgun with a barrel shorter than 18". Therefore, this gun doesn't meet the definition of NY's definition of a firearm. It does meet the federal definition of a firearm however which puts in the same category as pistol grip only shotguns which we can readily find at the gun shops.

You're still ignoring the definition of a shotgun, for the second time. This gun was never a shotgun because it never had a stock on it and therefore was never designed to be fired from the shoulder.
And you're still ignoring "Yeah, good luck with that". Dude, it's a Mossberg 590 with a pistol (yeah, yeah, "birds head") grip and a barrel cut down to 14". Good luck with it in NY. I'll say it again if you can get an FFL to transfer it go for it. Or just buy a Mossy 590 and cut the stock and barrel and see how that works for you.

Good god you're still doing it. No barrel was ever "cut down" and then you equate it in the end to what would be making a short barreled shotgun when these 2 things are by the law, not the same thing. Laws have meaning and these laws have more than 70 years of federal NFA court cases solidifying that they mean what they say, very plainly. These aren't being sold yet, so we'll have to wait a bit before they can be purchased in stores.

Whats wrong with it? Semi auto-no. ATF approved. It it a pistol? No-pistols have to be under 26'' What could the commies in Albany call it? Make up a new classification?

" the 590 Shockwave exists due to the best loophole. There exists a realm in American firearms law that allows for a non-NFA Mossberg 500 with 14-inchch barrel to exist. Without going into too deep into the why a Mossberg 590 that has never had a stock attached to it, and is longer than 26 inches is not considered a shotgun and considered a firearm. This puts the weapon’s legal definition as a firearm and not a shotgun. So barrel length isn’t an issue as long as the overall length is longer than 26 inches and it lacks a stock."
