It was a failure wasn't it? The guided rocket round was problematic and the recoil generated by the conventional round damaged the electronics needed by the former. At the time the 105mm L7/M68 gun was the top tier tank armament.
It was intended to primarily launch rocket propelled, guided projectiles but when they realized that they kind of sucked conventional ammunition was developed for it. The recoil force generated by these rounds frequently damaged the electronics used for guiding the rocket rounds. Not to mention they packed a more punch than the little Sheridan was really capable of handling. Upon firing the conventional ammunition the tank would rear back heavily on its suspension. Accurate fire on the move was impossible. In Vietnam the were deployed more like self propelled artillery than a scouting tank. The concept of a light "scout" tank was in itself also flawed, that role being more suited to lighter yet wheeled AFWs. Though our own M2 Bradley operates well as scout.
