During 1943 US stopped minting copper pennies for ammunition during war. They switched to steel. In 1944 they started minting copper pennies again (so much in fact 1944 is the most common of the wheat pennies). There were very few copper pennies minted in 1943. These are rare and can fetch a lot of money ($00s to $000s). There were fewer than 25 steel pennies minted in 1944, if you have one of these, they could be worth as much as $100,000.

When i was a kid my friend and I used to go to the bank with $1.00 and ask for two rolls of pennies. We'd check the rolls looking for wheaties (pre 1959) pennies. Those were the days when all the coin rolls were hand rolled, not machine rolled. One of those searchs i was handed a roll that was 100%, all 50 cents, 1943 steel pennies. I was praying for the one 1944 steel or the 1943 copper. Fyi, i got neither. All '43 steel.
