2022 gardening thread.

I didn’t see one started so I thought I would start one.
My season is starting off good and bad.
Apple trees are going nuts and I’ll have to heavily thin them. Lots and lots of blossoms.
Peach tree has very few blossoms, but I trimmed it late, but still plenty of new growth for blossoms. It’s 7-8 years from when I planted it and it was probably 3-4 years old when I bought it. I hear they only last about 10 years so maybe it’s dying?
Strawberries and raspberries are going bananas and I’m cutting my raspberries to 30” high to try to get less, but larger berries and easier to harvest. They looked messy when they were long and I’m letting more grow in.
blueberries look good and bad. Lots of blossoms, but a few of them got eaten pretty bad over winter by the rabbits. I’m working on love trapping the culprit now.
I may buy a few more berry bushes and remove my honey berry bushes. I get nothing from them since they don’t cross pollinate with each other. An online nursery screwed me.
My kiwi vine looks nice and grew a lot last year. I hope to get a few since this years cold start should be good since they are very frost sensitive and we should be last that point nowIm kind of excited
I’m actually going to do a veggie garden this year. I normally don’t, but I’m cutting back on side work and looking forward to enjoying life more. I’m too old and tired to keep going the pace I was.
I haven’t decided what I’m doing yet except lettuce and Parisian carrots, but I’ll add a few other things in the mix. Maybe a tomato or two and I’d like to try some peppers again. If it goes well I’ll expand next year.
I’m kind of excited and now that my maple tree is gone I have some more room and much more sun. Also I can actually compost now.

A bit early, but it appears you’ll be ok. Just have a back up plan incase of frost. They look good.

All I've done this year is plant green giants. I've got a dozen out now and need probably 20 across another side of my property, though that will likely wait until next year. My grass I struggled with in 2020 was amazing last year, but this year as I now have two large dogs has become a toilet. One dog is presently trained to do morning pee in a special cordoned off area but the other is still young and I've not bothered trying yet. Also both of them now dig, so I'm basically giving up on having a nice back yard

Trees are so cheap at home depot I think they must be stolen. Good bit cheaper than even lowes sells them for.

Watch the trees at Home Depot vs Lowes. The trees at other places maybe dwarf trees and Home Depot may not be dwarf trees. Dwarf trees are much more expensive than semi-dwarfs. I’m just guessing here. Could also be volume, but I don’t see Home Depot having a lot of trees by me. Tractor supply has a nice selection of good priced trees by me.

My Apple, peach and pear trees are doing well and budding nicely this spring . My blueberry bushes are also doing very well, as well as the red raspberries. I’ve got a nice patch of wild blackberries out back that I’ve been cultivating the last couple of years that produce tons of berries.I built a new raised bed and planted some Strawberries about a week ago that we’ll be looking forward to next year. The garlic that I put in last fall is looking good and healthy too. With any luck some veggie plants will be going into the garden boxes this weekend. I picked up some rough cut lumber from a farmer friend of mine that has a small saw mill and we are in the process of building a few more boxes to plant in this year. We plan on growing a lot more than we have in previous years to can and preserve.

The Home Depot out here by me has a nice selection of fruit and ornamental trees. The prices aren’t too bad , considering.

Yes you can but you will have to accumulate them to the bright sunshine or they will get fried. Put them outside on warm days and if the nights get cool bring them in the garage. Also put them in a slightly sunnier spot for a few days and then increase the sun to what you’ll expose them to every few days. Monitor them and if they wilt reduce the sun.

Absolutely. Bring then up into the warm sunlight for a couple of hours to harden off . Prep the area where you want to plant them and have at it. Make sure to bury the entire potato and sprout , except for the tips of the sprout. All the little nubs on the buried sprouts should grow a potato.

I picked up for planting today … Black beauty egg plant, Jalapeño, cubanella , Portuguese hots , red and green peppers. Beets, pickling cucumbers, zucchini, spaghetti and butternut squash. Sugar snap beans, bush beans and Brussel sprouts. I need to finish building a couple more 10’ boxes and then we’ll be planting san marzano tomatoes for canning , heirloom tomatoes for summer sandwiches and grape tomatoes to go with All the greens we plan to germinate and plant early summer.

Shallots, onions, and carrots are planted. Potatoes will go in the ground tomorrow. I want to let them dry out one more day. Well Tuesday because it’s supposed to rain tomorrow.

*sigh* waiting on soil delivery for my new raised bed before finishing off my planting. I have 16 tomato, 8 green bean, 12 snap pea. 8 cherry tomato, 4 potato, 8 zucchini, 16 assorted squash, carrots and beats. My containers mostly done, once i have the soil I'll figure out whats is going in raised bed together and the rest in containers. Have 2 large dual bank LED grow lights and heater/humidifier/dehumidifier in case i need to move everything inside. The lights will give enough light to turn my 2 car garage into a greenhouse this year if needed. Planning on building 12' x 20'ish greenhouse next year.

Where did you source the ground cherries? I don’t think that I’ve ever seen them in my neck of the woods.

I had them 10 years ago and they grew great for me. Things come in and out of popularity I’ll bet you can source them on line since I haven’t seen them in my area in years either. Wegmans sells them so maybe you could get some seed from them??

Started them from seeds. Our local Adam’s market had seed packages but in the past I’ve gotten most of my seeds from Baker Creek

Pissed off now, had a 3cu/yd delivery of some nice soil, proper Ph and fertilizer, got a call an hr after my delivery time, that there too busy this year to travel the 12mi (its the next town over from me) to drop a 1/2 dump full. Now i need to find another source. soes anyone have any ideas in chenango county for good topsoil, burells wants 4x as much for delivery as the soil itself, then i still need to balance and fertilize. Really only need 1cu/yd for raised bed at this point and can do bags for containers, but the clocks ticking... Unfortunatly I don't have a trailer to even haul small amounts from the various pits around me, so need someone that delivers.

I have a great spot for a few apples trees but i knew the deer will go to town on them unless I fence them off. I could put up a motion detection sprinkler perhaps, but it's not viable in the winter to do so.

A town near me each week, in May, drops off 10 (?) or more yards in a parking lot for people to ravage like hungry jackals. People fill buckets and trucks with it. Perhaps your town does, too. Another town near me doesn't do it with soil, but does with mulch.

The top soil at home depot isn't. I've noticed lowes carrying some shit also (they've a couple of brands). I won't buy bags of top soil now without first opening one to confirm it's actual dirt and not saw dust. The green bags at lowes for $3 are good top soil. You'd need 15 or so for a half yard @ 40 lbs each.

I have choices of sand or heavy clay, so shit soil all the way around. My garden does well but thats all raised bed, I can control it.

My property is scattered with apple trees and wild raspberries, all a farm 100+ years ago, but they gave up. I have been trying for 5 years now to get two store bought apple trees to do something, they live but do not flourish. Same thing with the raspberries. I have tried a dozen different varieties and dug a bunch last year that were very healthy. All fail, but wild ones grow just fine within eyesight.
