308 AR

Pick a brand and stick with it for your upper and lower, pick a pattern and stick with it for your lower, upper, handguard, barrel and BCG and you won't have any issues. I have built several different brands but stuck with the DPMS pattern for all of them. The DPMS pattern has the most aftermarket suppliers for Barrels, BCGs and handguards.

Lewis Tool and Machine
DPMS
Aero
Go Ballistic
Are all good brands and they fit DPMS uppers ( Aero and JT make their own uppers as well)

Spikes, PSA, or Anderson. I don't have any personal knowledge of the other two.

I guess my question would be, "Why .308?"

Nearly everything is different on the larger platform than on the AR15 platform. Not much is compatible or able to cross between the platforms.

Why? Because 308. LOL

There are two competing patterns for the AR308, Armalite and DPMS. If you stick with the same pattern throughout your build you won't have any issues.

Yeah. Had a DPMS 308. Sold it to fund my second 6.5 Grendel build.

I am building a 6.5 creedmoor upper for one of my 308 lowers.

Make sure it is a gen one upper before you buy it. Not sure if they sell the gen 2 yet but just in case.

Why are 7.62x51 ar type rifles so expensive compared to the 5.56x45 variety? Is it just supply/demand or are the specs higher quality for the higher pressures on the ar10.

I'm guessing just because everything else is bigger. Simple and shortest answer. That's why a full .22 AR would be cheaper than a 5.56 (I'm guessing).

A HD AR10? I hope you know what youre doing with this. 308 does overpentrate at short ranges. Hell even at long range. Thats why most people go 223/556 for HD. .22 at high speed will shatter upon impact, leaving little left to overpenetrate and everything left in the bad guy. A bigger hole does not always mean more EFFECTIVE damage.

Y'know what .308 has on other calibers such as 6.5 Creedmoor? I can go into Cabellas and buy a 500 round can of it, that's what.

Uuuummmm? There are more now. They have those "hybrid" smaller 308 out now. Smaller bolt etc etc.

AND. Most important not all dpms patterns fit on all the other dpms patterns. Ask me how i know. Psa is one that does not fit.....

The DPMS is actually the SR-25 pattern Kights Armament came up with correct? I belive that such is the more common pattern? Certainly for magazines.

No such thing as milspec ar10/ar308. That is why this discussion is happening.

Buy upper and lower from the same manufacturer. Make sure you buy the correct handguard rail hieght too.........there are 3 different heights for the dpms pattern alone.

DarkMagic, I looked into building an A10 myself and finally just threw up my hands, nothing is standardized, everything is over priced, by my calculations. I think you would be further ahead with the .223 configuration, and if you want a big bore, those are readily available for that format.

I agree. I normally want a standard caliber that you can get anywhere but the way I see it, if you want a .308 for the occasional hunt, or an occasional range day at 600 to 1000 yards and your primary is already a .223, a Grendal upper is cheaper along with the ammo to go with it.
