37 Things You Should Stock but Probably Aren’t
UPDATED: 67 Items! Every survivalist message board and prepper blog tells you to stock the same things; weapons, water, food basics, etc. So, I went looking for a list of things that you should be stocking, but probably aren’t. Everything on the list will make your life many times easier after the SHTF, especially in a Bugging-In scenario.

It's a good list. Thing is, where do you stop? When you prep to try and make life as comfortable as you can, I feel like it requires more space, becomes burdensome and almost counter productive. I'm not trying to sound like I know what the hell I'm talking about but it seems to me when the lights go out, the more you are prepared to live like the 1800's the happier you will be overall after adjusting than you would straining to perpetuate a previous and no longer sustainable life style.

Besides food, I just think you need the basics. Hand tools, screws, nails, duct tape, and sewing equipment. Basically things for patching up things you already have.

A bucket of water and hand cloth can be used to wipe your ass.

Everything else is just luxury. Nobody had toilet paper and soap in the old days.

Sewing supplies, all weights including upolstry thread.

Aluminum foil .

Zip lock freezer bags. Quart and gallon.

I would say any skill that has been convenienced out of mainstream existence would be gold. Having the knowledge to live the way people lived before electricity and grocery stores is what will keep you alive. Without that knowledge you are living blindly on finite resources.

That’s a good list! I’d add 2x4s to that list. Build with em or burn em in a pinch for $4 a pop you really can’t go wrong.

Just depends on how much room one has to store supplies . I have a book where a family of 5 adults lived on the plains of ND. in the late 1800's . The sod home was a perhaps 15 x15 feet and chickens and a calf or two spent all winter. together ... They survived .. But what a struggle ...

Hard cover books on edible local plants. Hard cover detailed preppers books in general because digital media may not be usable.

Bic lighters. Specifically Bic. I've had em survive falling overboard. Dried em and lit my stogies. Other fire starter supplies and methods yes but Bic lighters are cheap and golden by the dozen, or two or three. They're in my car, desk, bug out bag as my backup starter. Also double as flint and steel when empty. I buy them bulk.

Very surprised women's feminine products aren't listed. They're good for the obvious intended purpose, but also good for fire starting, medical/emergency dressing, and trade fodder.

PS: I don't limit my fire starting supply to Bics. I have a collection of vintage Zippos, flints and fluid. The fluid dries out but I have all the components. Zippos are inexpensive and windproof though not waterproof. Also another flint and steel source if dry. Keep an eye out for original Zippos at garage sales.

In a pinch, you can use diesel fuel in a Zippo. It's raunchy but will give you fire.
NEVER use gasoline or volatiles in a Zippo.

I see Coleman white gas lanterns are implied. If you're buying, get the ones that also use unleaded gas (dual fuel).

In addition to my Coleman, I also have a couple of traditional kerosene lanterns. They burn kerosene and also bug oil type torch oil. Great for camping (lower light). Keeps the bugs away. Inside at low light I can burn almost 24 hours on a small fill of kerosene. (WARNING: never burn Coleman fuel or gasoline in this type of lantern.)

No bears will ever make it through my camp. Wife owns a K-Bar and makes me sharpen it.
