.410 kick

My oldest son is well how can I put this.... a wimp. I made the mistake of letting him shoot a 20 gauge shotgun a few years ago and now he's afraid to shoot it again. He could handle it now for sure. I brought up a .410 and he said well what about the kick. I said it's a lot less than a 20 gauge. So am I right. I've never shot or even held one. I know it's just a small game gun, but maybe if I get him comfortable with that he will try the 20 gauge again. Then I can pass the .410 onto my younger son. Of course a .28 gauge could be discussed too, but I think there is more available in .410 gun and ammo wise. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks boys. Just trying to get my son in the woods. Love guns and his .22.

Small women (115 lbs) have no issues shooting a 410 mossberg 500 all afternoon. The same women, however, can shoot skeet / trap with a decent over under 12ga too. The linked table will some numbers to it. Don't forget that the gun (gun mass, stock, recoil pad, no recoil pad, etc.) you chose will also impact perceived recoil.

Like I said he's a wimp. He is 14 and weighs about 80 lbs.

Just gradually move up from .22. A pistol caliber carbine would be a nice step up. 357 lever gun. That sort of thing.

Dove load 2 and 3/4. It's about as light as they come. It was like 3 years ago so he's a lot bigger now. My 11 year old is bugging the crap out of me for a double barrel shotty. It's amazing how different kids can be.

Yeah. From recoil tables the 410 has twice the recoil energy or more. Both feel gentle to my wife and I would think the ar15 does a good job of absorbing recoil. We shoot one after the other often enough and the 410 recoils a bit more but it is no big deal. I would not have guessed the 410 was 2-4 times the recoil energy until I checked the tables. I should add that the recoil energy in some magnum 410 loads is twice the energy of some purpose built shorter 410 handgun loads. Ammo selection can give you training flexibility.

My son is about 100 lbs. and doesn't like the recoil from .410. He's shooting a Rossi .22 / .410 combo though. Its very light. He will shoot an AR or Mini-14 all day long though.

If your son doesn't want to shoot the .410, don't push him. When he's ready, he'll ask for it. Since he's recoil sensitive, stock up on .22 and let him go to town. A pistol caliber carbine might be a good next step up.

They kick a tad more thsn 22 but not much.

Add weight, and shoot from the bench. I have personally seen an average sized six year old shoot full power 5.56 from an AR that was loaded up with a big scope, flashlight, and laser ...from the bench on sandbags. Can't get enough!

Thanks guys. I'm not sure what to do. I agree I don't want to push him that has back fired on me twice now with the kid. It kills me to think I hindered his firearm enjoyment. I don't want to do that again. He is very sensati e to recoil. I want to get more into grousse hunting so I may get a small light .410 anyway. I'm sure one of my kids will use it at some point.

I think of a 410 not as a kids shotgun, but rather as an experts shotgun. The tiny pattern will be discouraging for kids since it requires skill they have not yet developed. Better to wait until a 20 gauge is tolerated. Work on rifle or pistol in the mean time.

I've got a LimbSaver on a Ruger Hawkeye Compact .308 (similar in size to a 10/22). When I was in Florida I took the .308 to the range, RSO thought it was a .22, then was worried that I might get hurt by it, wouldn't let me shoot it until he " could advise and monitor me." He finally watched while I shot it and practically begged me to try it.

The issue is he really only wants to hunt turkeys, but I'm just trying to give him other options and get him into other things.
