The United States Military raised the American flag atop Mt Suribachi

Iwo Jima was a horrendous battle. The flag raising was not the end of the battle, as I once thought. After the flag raising, the fighting went on for weeks, with many more US military killed and wounded before it was finally over.
Let us remember all those brave Americans who fought there. God bless the US military.

Two weeks after that, on the March 5th raid on Tokyo, my dad's B-29 was shot up by a Jap night fighter; took at least 68 hits, and knocked out one engine. They couldn't make it back to Guam, and they managed to belly in and land on Iwo Jima rather than ditching. GI's came out and led them into foxholes due to active Jap snipers. Dad said there were dead Jap bodies stacked all over the place, and it stunk to high heaven.

He and his entire crew were DAMN GRATEFUL for our guys who took the island and kept them from ditching. As it was, one of their original crew had died from drowning when he was temporarily assigned to another crew that had to ditch. I saw a History Channel special on Iwo Jima that pointed out that from Feb / March '45 until the end of the war, that there were 2,200+ emergency landings of B-29's with their 11 man crews. A hell of a lot of lives saved.

IDK much about Iwo, but I often think if Patton did not go in to get the 101st Airborne out that was pinned down in Bastone with no ammo, food, cloths etc... I might not be here today LOL. Patton had FREAKING CRAZY BALLS !!!! old blood and guts LOL

one little-known fact about Iwo Jima, it is the ONLY battle fought by American Marines, where American casualties were higher than the enemy.

The U.S. Marines suffered 26,000 casualties with 6800 dead

The Japanese suffered 22,000 casualties with 18,000 dead
