9mm Major

So I saw John Wick 3 last night and he used a firearm that was rated for 9mm Major. 1425 fps. I never heard of it and thought it was a fictitious loading.

Google showed me it was quite real. It’s used for competition and is mostly hand loaded but they do sell factory ammo as well.

Question. Why isn’t this more popular than .357 Sig? Why isn’t this more popular if all that’s required to fire it in most guns is a barrel swap that can withstand the pressures?

The only thing its good for is playing USPSA. Its an oddball round that appeals to a limited market.

Imagine the fun to be had accidentally dropping your 9mm major load into your Kel-Tec PF-9 or Ruger LC9. Hilarity to be had.

The only reason why 9mm major exists is because the original rules for uspsa limited and open class was the ammo had to make major power factor. And at the time only .45acp and .40sw were doing that.

But both rounds limit you on capacity (I believe the maximum magazine limit is 141cm)

Then someone realized I can shove a bunch more 38 super or 9mm rounds in that size magazine and if i just crank up then speed in the 9mm I can make major pf.

Soon they made a rule change that to be scored major pf it has to be atleast .40 caliber and .45 caliber

Because .357sig was designed for duty use and hollow points.

9mm major was loaded by guys trying to score 2 extra points for a B zone hit while also getting a few extra rounds in a magazine.

9mm major was probably loaded up by some guy in a garage (wildcatter) and info got passed around and eventually someone finally sent the info in to SAAMI speced hoping more ammo companies will load the ammo semi commercially so they dont have to keep loading their own

Right. Not the point though. What I’m saying is that it has merit regardless of who loaded it in a garage and it would serve quite well over a Sig per say if it was pushed by a major company who created a firearm for it.

If Glock for example put out a new gun for it, it would take off. All it takes is a few police departments to field it.

Glock wouldnt put out a new round for it, they would have to come up with a completely new stronger polymer frame.

Not to mention the abuse that those rounds put on the gun
Which to a competition shooter isnt a big deal as most will probably be replacing their springs and shit before a major match and throught the year, vs a police department who wants to get more than say (made up number here) 5,000 rounds per gun

I'm not saying 9mm isnt cool, or is dumb, all I'm saying is it's a niche round with one purpose, and that was some guys wanted to game the system when rules for Major PF was just bullet weight and speed, so they could jam more rounds into a magazines meaning less reloads on a stage and still get those 2 extra points on non A zone hits.

Eventually the rules committee decided that specific divisions can only be .40 or .45 caliber bullets trying to keep them fair across the board.

Now the only people that consider 9mm major are those that are shooting Limited division and Open division.


(Edit, the original 9mm major and .38super, and even another round specifically designed by S&W was guys found a way to compete in .45acp specific divisions, where at the time the only .45acp guns were all pretty much single stack guns with 7-9 rounds and they figured with 9mm major hey I can get a huge advantage with my times by having double the capacity This all being IPSC......

The guys I see running 9 Major are using 5-6" compensated barrels. It would be horrible to shoot in a carry size gun.

I yes I brought up the .38 super because YOU didnt understand why some super niche round designed for competition (9mmm) wasnt super popular over .357 sig. And I (me again) was pointing out that 9mmm is just like .38 super in that the only reason it's a thing today is because of things like IPSC and USPSA competition.
