Those are the definitions for a rifle. I don’t know if all the definitions for a pistol are the same (like pistols have a weight limit if they have a detachable mag). If you’ve ever looked at the “SAFE” act website, the pistol with this compensator could only really be accused of having a “barrel shroud”, as it partially covers the barrel (like a few millimeters of it at the end) but I don’t know if it would allow you to grip the barrel without getting burnt (which is one of the stipulations for the barrel shroud).

I think it’s good to go. I doubt, in the unlikely chance anyone ended up in trouble for one of these, that any prosecutor could claim it’s a shroud, since holding the roughly inch? long compensator with your non firing hand would burn it to hell. I’d buy one, but I wonder if they actually work.

Cool concept but I hate that you have to be locked in to buying a proprietary barrel. I get that it's necessary but it makes a part that could be $99 dollars tops to $350. And also do these guys have a track record with quality barrels? Looks like they are more in the business of trinkets and accessories. And lastly are there any videos showing it's accuracy? It could be a horrible POI shift just like the glock produced one. I would hold off on it until there are reviews to be honest.
1st, it's a proprietary barrel for reasons stated, to get the comp the size that it is (just like the KKM comp has to go on a KKM comp barrel) so figure threaded barrel is about 200-350 depending (can be had for down in the $170 as well] and then $80-100 for a comp ( so looking at $250-450 anyways)
2nd they are not the ones making the barrel

I did see a vid of someone shooting it but it was about 30 secs long and didn't show anything meaningful. Like I said I get that you have to get the proprietary barrel to overcome the length of the threading on a traditional barrel but at least with a traditional barrel you can put a can on it. I'd like to know who's making the barrel though. If it's someone like lone wolf then at least they would have that going for them. Then it would just come down to if the comp itself is any good.

And a cant have a can here in NY sooooo yeah that's pointless. And sorry but if you are going to be throwing a can on I'm sure the extra $200 for a barrel isnt going to be much of an issue

Holy cow! 350 is a lot of money for this.
Unless creating a race gun where fractions of a second count in competitons, I just really don't see the worth for a carry or home defense gun. More can go wrong than good. You can't remove the barrel from the slide for detailed cleaning and if you ever have to use it for self defense, you may run into issues and have to explain the legality of the threaded barrel. The ATF is the only governing agency that has any kind of definition of what no longer constitutes a threaded barrel and their only approved methods involve silver solder and welding. I guess if you use those methods then it's a non issue.
At self defense distances, the marginal help in recoil isn't really going help to the point that you can now get hits on a chest sized target whereas you couldn't previously without the compensator.
Based on the price, potential legalities, and a marginal performance increase assuming there isn't a POI shift, I'd pass on this for self defense purposes in this state.
The pro's don't outweigh the negatives. A longer, ported barrel with the work done by a Smith would probably be cheaper and it can easily be swapped out should the need arise.

Not to mention other comps suggest (require) red locktite so if anything this makes going to the range (in a free state) with your comped gun that you want to shoot with a can a lot easier. Pop the pin out take the gun down, swap barrels, toss on can, pew pew, reverse order bamm comp'd EDC set up ready to go again.
(And to be honest, if I was in a free state that allowed cans, I would most likely have a dedicated slide/barrel/recoil spring that was tuned to the can, but this comp can run factory springs. And it would just be an easy swap of slides)

Again the price isnt that much more than a comparable threaded barrel and compensator.
As for the legality, they call it a cali comp and (cant find it on their page right now) suggest just welding the retaining pin so now you have essentially a 3 port barrel. Only difference is its 1 on top and two on the sides and now you dont have to kill out your slide which in the end will probably run you the same or more in price

Some comps like the lone wolf have a set screw. You could get away with using it without any loctite if you just keep your eye on it or you could use blue loctite which is easily taken off. No barrel swapping. Just remove the comp and put a thread protector on it or put the comp back on. No messing with swapping anything.
For cans you don't have to have dedicated slides, or recoil springs and no "tuning" is needed. The Nielsen device aka recoil booster takes care of all that. You only need a threaded barrel. So again unless you for some reason want to have a normal barrel vs a threaded one there is no need to swap barrels. Just put your devices on and take them off.

"Night Shoots
While conducting the low-light shoots during the course to simulate a car jacking, mugging, home defense, etc., the students with the ported barrels encountered a pretty significant problem.
The students were in a low-light environment with pretty significant lume provided by the stars, street lamps, moon, etc., there wasn’t really a problem in spotting a target at close combative range. While conducting the drill, the student were facing the driver door of the vehicle as if they were opening the door, both hands free and away from their weapon. On the command “Threat”, the students were to engage three targets, one fully exposed two partially exposed behind cover (5, 10, 15 yards) in a specified time. The students who did not have the ported barrels did just fine while the students with the ported barrels did not. Why is that?
After conducting the drill myself and asking the students what they thought, we came to one simple answer as to why our time were significantly slower. We were blind! We weren’t truly blind, but the excessive light that comes from the ports on the barrel caused by burning powder, caused our vision to “go blind” or “white out” for a brief period of time. If you’ve ever been in the dark for a while and turn on the lights, you know exactly what I’m talking about. There really isn’t a way to counter this that I could come up with. If you’re only engaging one target, this may not be a problem, but if there are more, you may find yourself struggling to find and engage the other targets in a night environment. The same situation allied to the students on the other night/low-light drills.
Burns!
Not all confrontations occur at a desired distance that we would like for pistol engagements. Sometime they happen while in a fist fight or grapple. When engaging a target at combative distance (muzzle contact) or engaging from a weapons retention stance, you may find yourself with a few extra marks on your body than you expected. The burning gases that exit the ports are extremely hot! If you are shooting from a retention stance or with the weapon tucked close to your side, the burning powder can cause harm to you. Though the pain won’t kill you, other problems may be presented such as loss of focus, wounds that may render one limb/finger or body part unusable, or worst case scenario, you’re wearing clothing that is prone to catching fire (always assume the worse case scenario)."
BTW, a Ford dealer would not probably fill you in on the advantages of buying a Chevy !
