A good day in the woods with my son

Well I took my son hunting today we didn't shoot anything, but there were some great promising signs.
Many turkey feathers and poop where I want to hunt turkeys in 2 weeks.
Many squirell nests around. I had an opportunity to shoot a few, but wanted to give my son a chance. He was too slow and too impatient, but that's ok. A few good shots were illegal one on the road and one too close to some trailers. One squirrel was huge the one by the trailers. It was the size of a small cat. I think it was a fox squirrel. He was on the ground and stole a whole apple. I tried to follow him to an area where I could legally shoot him, but I got hung up on some vines and was unable to locate it again.
I have never flushed so many grouse in an hournin my life. I had a great shot at one, but didn't pull the trigger. I thought it was coming into the logging road, but it didn't. I know I should have waited, but I did. I flushed another 8-10, but never even saw the others too thick and too green still.
Lots of deer signs and a nice large buck rubbing on a tree on the property I hunt. I saw 3 deer one large buck I presume by the size. Hunting should be good this year.

GOOD on you for getting out there with your Son. I remember when our Sons were younger, and how much time we spent together in the woods. Those were some of the best times, and offered GREAT opportunity to teach them life lessons. That was back in the early to mid 80's, seems like a lifetime ago. Where did the time go??

I'm always with my kids. If I'm not at work or on a side job I'm with them. I take them hiking, fishing, kayaking, shooting, and stuff like that all the time. I bought my older son 3 kayaks before he found one he likes. I know that sounds crazy, but now I have 2 extras for kids friends, mother in law, or a friend of mine.

I'm itching to take my oldest (he's 4) out to chase squirrels, but he's not quite ready yet. He's never been around a gun being shot, and despite how much he wants one, he doesn't fully understand what he's asking for. I plan to get him out shooting with me soon, though, to get him introduced (starting with the .22, the quietest gun I own outside of a bb gun)

I'll tell you I made a few mistakes with my older son and don't rush it. I like him shoot a shotgun about 3-4 years ago and he still won't touch one. The kick did it in for him. I feared I screwed that one up for life.

It's taking a lot of restraint to not take him shooting with me. It helps that I only go maybe once a year, but he's been on me a lot lately, and it's something I really want to do with him, so it's definitely difficult to continually say no.

We may get him started on NERF soon, to build some responsibility.

It's great to see you guys taking the time to get the young ones going in your foot steps.

I started off on my kids out shooting at five years old, the grand kids are getting started at that also.

The red Ryder was their first gun, shooting balloons, coke cans full of water and paper targets ( the sight n see ones).
Once they do good here at the house with the red ryder they get to go out out in the mountains for shooting with 22 short ammo in a single shot 22 rifle. The pellet gun I have makes more noise then the 22 shorts in the rifle.

By six years old they all shoot decent and get better every year.

There is a youth shooting club at ten x shooting club in western ny if anyone's interested. I take my kids. Good program. It's starting in December.

can you do a squirrel call with your mouth ?? if not .. here .. i have raised a few tree rats but they never told me how to make the sound to run and hide during deer season LOL ..

That's seriously awesome. Thanks. There were so many squirrel nests around, but my son was not patient enough to wait. This might entice them to come out earlier.

I do something similar with a 20ga shell on my pinky and just tap it on the stock. I start easy with 1, then 2, then 3, and build up. It actually works pretty well. I've watched squirrels start walking around like nothing's there, and even straight toward me.
