I went to the range a couple days ago, and one of the guns I took with me was a Winchester 94. This particular one is chambered in .45 Colt, not that it makes any difference. Anyway, there was another club member there with his two young kids. One girl, I'm guessing about 8 and a boy, about 6 years old. The kids were well behaved, and having fun burning up as much rimfire ammunition as they could. As they were taking turns on their rifle, the girl came over and was looking over the rifles I had laid out. She seemed to have an affinity for the Win.94. Of course I let her shoot it a few times. After, she wiped the rifle down and handed it back to me. While she was wiping her fingerprints off the beautifully blued receiver, she asked "What's this for ?" She was pointing to the left side of the receiver. There is a stud, not unlike a stud for a sling, that has a steel ring going through it. To the ring is a roughly 3" tab of leather.
I'm not a cowboy, and I don't play one on television. That being said, I'm not an idiot, either. ( although there are people that would disagree ). "You know, " I said, " I never really thought about it." The best I could do to answer her question, was to guess at a couple logical possibilities. I told her that I thought it probably had something to do with keeping the rifle in a scabbard while on horseback. That seemed the most logical, singe at NO time in ANY western movie have I seen a cowboy use a lever gun with a single point sling attached.
OK, now you read the story. So ? What IS that ring really for ?
Leather tab removed for this picture.
