how many here have access to ranges longer than 100 yards? Would you participate in a challenge at greater distances if offered?
You cant find a few hours to spare all month? I'm home 3-4 out of the entire month and I drive 57 miles to my range and I find the time. Granted its the highlight of my entire break.I can go to 300 at the farm i hunt on , 100 at the range in town .. its just getting the time to get out there and shoot these challenges GRRrrrrr
The targets I would use are bench rest targets. If I use targets like the SR1 at 200 yards the bench rest shooters are going to be 100/10x every shoot. 1/3" X ring at 200, 1.4" X ring at 300 and 400. Otherwise everyone is turning in perfect scores each week.I can get out to 200 yards, there is a 300 yard berm but its not practical to access.
Of course I don't have any magnified optics either but I will be getting one in a few months I imagine, a 1-6 type. that should suffice for 300 yards though not for the teeny tiny targets we usually do.
That would be my suggestion, increase the size of the target areas. I have excellent vision but even at 25 yards with our typical rifle targets its difficult to discern the details with no magnification. Different elements of a single match could be printed on seperate pieces of paper maybe? Look at the size of the SR1 100 yard target for example.
Just give us something thats visually easy to discern is all I'm saying. And instead of different catagories would it be possible to have score modifiers depending on equipment? Modifiers for .22LR or caliber in general, magnified vs unmagnified vs irons? The targets I would use are bench rest targets. Or I have to have different shooting positions for the bigger targets.
Too complicated. The Scoped rifle shoots I am used to have three class, light, heavy and open.Just give us something thats visually easy to discern is all I'm saying. Such would allow for varied equipment levels to be more competitive with one another and this may lead to increased participation.

light is under 10 pounds
heavy is over 10 pounds
open is the bench rest class
Well, I eventually plan to get a bolt gun with a decently magnifed optic on it but its not a priority right now. It will be some time before I have anything more than an AR with a 1-6 scope on it. I will try out the 300 yard bern at my range to see how feasible it would be for me to use but its located way up a hillside, overgrown and from below it looks almost inaccessible. Sight lines are blocked by trees from all but one bench too. That really nice range I went to for my training has a lane out to 500 yards I think. But its 75 miles from my apt and you need a membership too.Too complicated. The Scoped rifle shoots I am used to have three class, light, heavy and open.

Light and heavy class course of fire is: 5 standing, 5 sitting at an SR1 target 100 yards and 5 off the bench at 200 yards at a bench rest target.
Open class course of fire is: 5 rounds from the bench at 100, 200, 300, and 400 at bench rest sized targets.
10 pounds with scope unloaded10 pounds with the scope? Ammo?
This is what my leagues open class shoots at 100 I have cut it down to fit on a sheet of paper. The 200 is similar but a little bigger Bulls. View attachment 20544
Didn't want to show you a real target and scare you off with my shooting prowess.Damn dude!
You missed the entire paper! WTF?
.

Yeah I got a new ergonomic grip coming for it too. To make the poking easier.Good thinking. Were you able to get that 6.5 mm pencil? For poking holes?
Funny thing about that target is: I have not been able to shoot it clean yet. The 200, 300 and 400 I have shot perfect. I always seem to drop 1-3 points on the 100 no matter how good I haves done on the others. I have shot them in all different orders too, just to see if the cause was the gun getting dirty or too hot, not hot enough. The 100 yard is my nemesis.
.303 Brit is renown for that. Supposedly groups tighter at 300 yards than it does at 100 yards.I forget the name of it, but there is a phenomenon that the bullet has not settled in at a 100. They’re making corkscrew like approaches and the further out you go the tighter the corkscrew is. At 100 it’s a wider.
Do some research, you will see it. That’s why sometimes it’s better to test loads at a little further out, to give the boy a little extra time to settle in.

A friend and I would be interested as we only have access to 200 yards. We are ok to 200 but no clue what to expect when moving out by the 100s. So, the problem for us would be load development/practice depending on how far away the range is from us. If the competition was laxed enough to allow some time to sight in the longer distances and have some fun we would be in.
I was thinking a shoot and post weekly type competition. Kind of like a postal match.A friend and I would be interested as we only have access to 200 yards.
