I am looking for a hand forged knife for myself. I'm also looking to buy one for my older son. He's turning 13 and I think it would be a cool birthday present for him. I thought the prices would be crazy expensive and some are. Some are a lot cheaper than I thought. I never thought I could get one for $100-$150. Let me know what you think and if you know of anywhere that fits that price range. I do t need anything crazy big or fancy.

I picked up this for $50 in the Knifemaker's For Sale section. They break it down to production fixed, production folder, knifemaker folder, fixed......
These don't appear to be assembled knife kits but actual made knives.
One of the makers should have a rustic style knife or could make one.

Hand forged knives are going to be very expensive and many are not very good quality. Look for established makers with good customer reviews.

Hand made and hand forged are completely different.

Also, hand forged knives are made of high carbon steel. They rust if you look at them wrong. Alot of makers use questionable steel because its easier to forge and easier to make look good. Making a high quality knife from high quality steel is going to cost you between $300-$1000.

A good gun oil and a little care will keep the rust away, but you must be persistent.

Opt for stainless vs 01/ 02 tool steel or 1095 high carbon.
Mine is 1095, I wiped it with a rag with a touch of oil on it. No issues even though I keep it in a leather sheath ( that's a no no).

I like this guy from Poland's work. He uses some of the "super steel" like Vanadis 4 & M390.
They hold an edge for a long time but are harder to sharpen and require a diamond hone vs a standard stone.

I think the first thing to decide it the intended use of the knife.
Bushcraft knives have a different shape and edge grind than a skinner. A stabbing knife will be different than one intended to baton ( split) firewood while camping.
Handle material choices are endless as well. Wood, Micarta, G-10.

If you look at the stuff on Ebay, know that most of the Damascus stuff out there is not real. A lot of the cheaper knives come from Pakistan.
CFK knives are poorly spoken of on the Bladeforum but his Ebay feedback is outstanding and they have tons of different knives for sale ....cheap.

And what young lad would not LOVE an Apokatana or perhaps a Rat-Bastard from Zombietools ?

So he's a funny kid. I showed him a few things to get some ideas of what handle he would like. He liked one on the blade forums, but said I'd really like a pair of scissors on my knife. I showed him a $55.00 Swiss Army knife and he flipped his lid. So there we have it. I'll buy him the stupid Swiss Army knife. WAy cheaper.
Leaves more $$ for me to buy a knife. I always wanted a nice knife.

I don't think you are going to find anything good hand forged at that price IMO.

BUUUUT for what you're after I can't recomend the GNS from LT Wright enough. $140 for scandi or saber grinds and hand made in the United States.

You can find videos on their work online and IIRC you get choices of handle material etc..

I'm certainly blessed and the reason most hand forged, hand made knives are so expensive are two main reasons: No.1 Lots of overhead (which I am blessed not to have) and No. 2 Name (which I'm just a little fish in a very very big pond but for as long as my bills are paid and my work brings honor and glory to the One who saved me, I will keep doing what I'm doing). I'm always willing to send out a blade for a full field testing and review so if your interested, please let me know and I will send you one out right away! All of my knives are guaranteed for life and I will do full restoration and reconditioning if ever needed for free for life and best of all, it's all done right here in the great USA with USA steel!!!!

I love these, something about Damascus looking so nice. Too bad I can't maintain a sharp blade to save my life. I keep buying garbage knives because I know I'll ruin them anyway.

Ah, thanks!!!! Well to keep a sharp blade in my opinion requires 3 things: 1. a good ceramic sharpening rod by lansky (costs about 8.00!) I prefer rods since they are easy to carry in the field or have handy in the shop and you can let the blades angle guide you up and down the rod vs forcing a blade up and down a flat stone (stones in my opinion are best suited for flat grinds much like a straight razor). 2. A good leather strop (a nice old leather belt is my personal preference) and strop your knife EVERY time you use it (I only use the ceramic rod if their is damage to the edge, otherwise good high carbon steel only needs stroping. 3. Practice! It's easy keeping a razor sharp edge with high carbon steel!!!
