Are "Others" still legal in NYS as of now?

I am planning in moving a few rifles down to Florida and it just came to mind that there have been several recent changes ..................one or two!!

I was planning on flying down with my "Other" pistol/rifle from Westchester airport - pistol brace, detachable mag, etc

I know there are new laws coming into effect in terms of the braces/others at the end of the year

But does anyone know if "others" as they stand - brace, detachable mag, etc., are still legal in NYS?

Or is the Gestapo likely to go jihad on me at the airport?

They will be properly secured, unloaded, etc

From what I understand they have been banned over the summer. So you either have to modify it into a safe AR. (16 inch barrel and pinned mag) or disassemble it.

No she made them illegal as far as I know. I swapped the upper to a 16" and bought a comp mag. Also removed the brace.

Like Maverick said take it apart. You can ship the whole lower down there and bring the upper with you however that is done legally. Eventually you will have to remove the brace or get a tax stamp.

So far, everything I've seen regarding the brace and tax stamp, applies to <26" OAL. Not that they won't change it

3. put the upper in the gun case and take it on the flight as checked baggage?

You can legally ship the lower yourself without an FFL, as long as you are shipping it to yourself (since possession does not change in that circumstance).

Both the upper and the lower are legal on their own.

If you check the lower you have to check it as a gun with the extra hassle. Checking the upper is just parts, throw it in with your dirty socks.

You can ship the upper as just parts without any complication. Shipping the lower will require extra paperwork too.

If you are shipping to yourself, you do not need an FFL on either end.

I would recommend checking the upper and shipping the lower (or shipping both, separately) .

That should eliminate any possibility of a problem with the assembled firearm not being legal on the NY end in the remote chance that anything comes up.

Looks like neither FedEx nor UPS will let a non FFL ship a firearm. Assuming you tell them what's in the box anyway. Not sure there's any legal issue though.

Ironically, USPS might be the best option.

If it was a complete rifle USPS would ship it no problem.

The fact that it *might* be a pistol *might* cause a problem.

I'd try, worst they can do is say no.

You can always try another branch and roll the dice again too.

Or you could drop it in a box with some newspaper and tell UPS it's a hood ornament.

If you are really that worried about it just ship the lower through an ffl and pay the fee.
This way you know they can't say that you possibly did anything wrong.

Best is to take whatever has a serial number on the plane with you as discussed. I would also put the BCG there as well. Also you can check gun parts as far as I know. Call the airline and maybe you could check it all but yes take certain things off that firearm before going to the airport and if it were me I’d still ship some things to myself to avoid issues with them assuming what you had or will have might be illegal.
As for shipping gun parts I’m not sure since it was all changed recently but last time I had to go to the regional hub to do that. None of the local drop off and ship places would take it for me and I had no frames or serialized parts in the box. You could also not tell them what is in there but if it gets lost you could be SOL. When you buy extra insurance they ask what’s in it. You could say machined metal part sent for coating and possible get away with it.
