One reason i never got an echo is because I didn't trust Amazon not to store lots of audio data there. I got in the beta list of users back in the day and resold my echo before even turning it on!

Precisely. Always listening and you can bet they record everything they hear. Do you really want a company to have a record of everything that is said in your house? I am astonished at how people don't realize this.

The echo claims that it only sends your audio to the "cloud" after the "alexa" keyword turns it on. This may be true. However, what is also true is that amazon stores in perpetuity all of your audio requests (they can or at least could be manually deleted, in the past, but this is a manual step and requires regular attention). I also think amazon should pay people, not the other way around, considering how much data it is mining. From requests as mundane as how to cook to news on foreign interests, all this can be programmatically parsed and an image created of the person in a way that no other company can do. Google, apple all have data, too, but it's not necessarily audio, and in theory you know exactly what's going through it. With audio you don't control the background noise.

THIS SAID, I got a fire tv stick 2 with alexa voice search over Xmas and it's awesome. But, I do only use it for movie search and I have to hold the button down before it records lol

It's always listening. Hence it can hear the activation word.

The problem is legality. And if I get busted for turning all these deviants into the snitch line anything because of it, and it sticks, again, not a world I want to live in.

If that is true then the cops have nothing to search for. I have a sneaky suspicion their claim may not be true, but they don't want the public to know this. Facebook has had to correct the record recently when it turned out the advertising metrics previously claimed were wrong.

What if someone in the household is named 'Alex' or 'Alec'? Does it turn on then?

I am sure it is a useful tool. But you can't tell me it's not going to bite us in the ass.
