Barrett M99 50 BMG legal in NYC?

Hey guys,

I live in NYC (yeah, I know ) and I've been trying to buy an M99 (50 cal) from a local dealer for several months. I have an NYC rifle/shotgun permit. He keeps saying that he is not sure that it's legal and that he will call the NYPD license division hotline to find out. This happened 3 times already. I've read both the NY SAFE act and NYC rifle/shotgun laws and nowhere it says that a single-shot M99 is illegal.

Does anyone have any info or advice? I'm getting tired of the runaround.

Yup, I did look at that - back when I was applying for my shotgun permit and again a few months ago when I made a decision to buy the M99. The document does not mention anything about any 50 cal weapons. They also reference some "Local Law 78" from 1991, which does not seem to exist anymore (at least I could not find any references to it on the Internet).

Their definition of assault weapons is:

(a) Any semiautomatic centerfire or rimfire rifle or semiautomatic shotgun which has one or more of the following features: <list of features>
(b) Any shotguns with a revolving cylinder magazine.
(c) Any part, or combination of parts, designed or intended to readily convert a rifle or shotgun into an assault weapon.

Based on the above, the M99 does not qualify because it's a single shot rifle and as such has no magazine, so I don't believe there is an issue with owning one. I just wanted to confirm because my local dealer is not very interested and I don't want to waste time and money buying something that I can't even use.

I have no idea if it is legal for you to own but you have to think about where you will shoot it. I'm unaware of any down state ranges that allow 50 cal. Private property is another story. Back in the day you could do anything you wanted at Calverton but I don't think that is the case anymore.

Gun For Hire in NJ allows 50 cal. They only have a 50 yrd range, but it's better than nothing. I also just read everything on Calverton's web site and it does not mention anything about 50 cal being prohibited. Do they not allow it?

I saw a skell female squatting between two cars with her draws dropped all the way in Park Slope the other day. It's quite sad what NYC has been turning into; but no real surprise to me. The more liberals, the more it will eventually turn into San Francisco with people shitting on the sidewalks.

As long as liberals continue to make a thrust into this country and corrupt American society we will eventually become a living version of the movie Idiocracy.
