Beaver removal

I know some one who has beavers on their property and they are just starting to build a dam. There entire property runs along the creek and will be flooded. Essentially they will not be able to get to their property or use any of the property except a bit that’s up a hill with no way to get there.
Anyone experience this and get a permit with the dec. I see you can remove the dam if it’s less than two years old. It’s literally just starting to be built. They want to have some one shoot them.
Ask for permission or take matters into their own hands?

Look up the local trappers association. Most likely they will come out and trap. Beaver pelts are still worth something to the guys that still trap.

I say, if you don't get a prompt response from the DEC, get a lawyer to send a letter. Let them know you're prepping for legal action promptly due to damage it could cause, and their slow response.

semi funny story. MY BIL owns about 240+ acres and they had the DEC dig ponds for them under some conservation easment years ago. well.....the beavers moved in...and the one owner..BIL's freind. like to F with them...digs up and destroys dams.....shoots at em...just a real PIA to them. But they persist. The bad new is he dropped a revolver one day he was out F ing with them and it went off and went thru his but up to the middle of his chest cavity...not far from the heart....I guess those beavers had the last laugh. investigating it the DEC said dont mess with the beavers and habitat.....they need a place to be.... basically told him he cant do anything to evict them.
I didnt now or hear about the less that 2 years old deal..as all these damn were being bullt when he "blew em up" with tannerite or whatever he did it with!!!!!

For what it's worth I do know people who have gotten permits to remove beavers after contacting DEC. I don't know the details on what they did to get it. I believe there was a town bridge nearby and it was threatening that. Again, I don't know the circumstances.

Seeking out trappers would also be a good course of action. I was actually thinking about trying to get my trapping license this year.

Agreed....keep to yourself and take care of it yourself and how you see fit... no need to involve anyone..your property...your guests to evict.

To trap them you still need that special permit unless they are in season and I don’t think they are at this time. I didn’t look. A guy last time tried to trap them in season but had no luck. See the problem is the damns disappear so I don’t think they have a pattern yet.
Some one I know had a shot this weekend but it wasn’t a safe shot so it was smartly not taken or human life and trucks would have been in danger.

Now THAT would be big trouble to be "quietly" dealing with his problem and having stray rounds make contact with unintended targets. Yikes!

Used to own 60+ acres near West Monroe - creek on one side, and beavers moved in after a while and began to rebuild an old dam.

Didn't realize it until they were done, and about 3-5 acres were flooded.

Didn't know the rules that said you couldn't rip out a dam without some permission from someone.

Long story longer, I had started letting out enough water to get the beavers attention, them laid in wait when they showed up. Shot a few.

One day I tore the hell out of it, shot a couple more of the little bastards.

A few days later I get home from work and find a card from a DEC officer with a note to call him.

Turns out someone downstream ratted me out when I washed out their dam on the creek to create a fishing pond. I broke some rule/regulation about tearing up beaver dams.

The guy who ratted me out got in trouble too - for his dam. DEC guy was nice, had to ticket me ($50 fine). But he gave me the name of another DEC guy who came in, surveyed the damage and gave me some permit to shoot or trap them. Couldn't bother the lodge though (??).

Took a trapping course, bought some gear and annihilated them - couldn't sell the pelts under the permit, had to bury them. Actually trapping was fun, although cold. Conibear 330's still scare the shit out of me.

So, I'd call DEC, have the proper person come out, look around and get the permit.

This thread reminds me a lot of the dog licensing thread, where I mentioned that dog licenses in my area cost $25, and the fine for being caught with an unlicensed dog was $25. Let's just say I haven't paid any fines yet.

So, what we've heard from this thread is as follows:

1) If your friend calls the DEC, they may give your friend a permit to take care of the problem, or they might expressly prohibit your friend from doing anything about it.

vs.

2) If your friend doesn't call the DEC, they may or may not fine your friend $50, if they find out about it (and that's a big 'if').


The proper course of action seems clear to me, bud.

The property is very private and back pretty far off the road. Also downstream there is no one close to the creek for say half a mile. No lodge yet at all. A couple holes in the one bank and that’s it. They have 9acres so flooding 5 acres where the structure is would be devastating.
