Ruger makes a compact 1911 in 9mm that looks pretty nice. It’s under a grand. They may have it in 45 as well.
My FIL has one of these and loves it. He has the cheaper model and much preferred it over his Colt.

I was thinking about the Ruger. I looked into them many years ago when they first came on scene.

Nothing but good reviews on the Springfield Armory 1911 DS Prodigy. A bit over what you want to spend but you can put a dot on it and seems like a good investment.
I have had a Kimber ultra carry for about 12 years now. Aluminum frame, bull barrel. Nice gun.
look at the Springfield EMP series. The Ronins are nice pistols.
I have thought also of the EMP guns. I used to love selling them. So many guns that I should have bought when I had access to all of the deals.....
Springfield as a decent deal for all Military and First Responders, just no dealers around here. I sent them an email to see how I can proceed with their deal. Years ago, it was a fantastic % off.
I've had several Commanders, Officers, and their likenesses, all needed a pretty strong grip & wrist to shoot...that said I have a Detonics Combat master that's not too bad to shoot even with 230gr Ball, it's a heavy pistol, but surprisingly accurate and reliable. light weight often means heavier recoil, which eventually leads to flinches, bad habits, and relegation to the back of the Safe.
Been quite some time since I actually shopped for a handgun. So many new variations have hit the market.

There is a gun show coming to the fair grounds in a few weeks, maybe I will find what I am looking for.
Ehh the hardest little gun to shoot I have is the Para warthog. But it is still fun to shoot.

They call it a rose gold finish, but it looks a lot more like a copper/bronze to me.
It is very concealable, and not at all girly in that color.

Always liked those little guns. I thought SA would have sold a lot more of their 911's than they did.

I almost went with that but just picked up the Springfield Garrison today. I’ll post a pic tomorrow when I get around. Beautiful gun indeed. But the Bul is next on the list for me

Kimber has many options out there well under 1K.
one of the local Shops has a BUL and I have to say it's one of the nicest, slickest 1911's I've ever handled... hate to say it, but it was smoother than my Kimber SIS.
Anymore there are tons of 1911's out there that are damn fine right out of the box, and there are those that'll need tweaking, and still might not be worth a damn.

Depending of caliber, I'd go with a Springfield Armory XD.
Had an XD Service in .45 ACP w/4" barrel for years. Had to sell it.
Most dependable weapon I've ever owned. Put 1000's of reloads through it during training with only 2 stoppages, both failure to extract.
Wasn't the gun, it was one brand of shitty brass that I missed during culling brass.
