Black Powder Pistol Kit

I finally got around to start working on a .50 cal Black Powder Pistol Kit I got as a gift.

I did some of the minor woodworking required for fitment.

I have to stand edges down to make them flush with the metal/brass fittings and stain the wood to finish it up. I'm really tempted to blue the barrel and other non brass pieces.

As for the wood I'm thinking nice dark cherry stain.

When I was 15, I spent two weeks in a hospital in the mountains of NC after appendicitis and the accompanying infection.

As a "here's something to do" I was given a kit to build a 45 cal black powder derringer. Still have it. Have never shot it

when i was a teen .. my dad did one of them kits ..

when i was in the NAVA and at my Duty Station SIMA South Carolina .. the PX was selling the rifle kits .. so i bought one and did it the barracks
never had a issue when barracks inspections came up .. this was back in the late 80's ..

Update:

Sanded down the wood edges to have smooth contours with the brass pieces and applied the first coating of "gunwood" stain.

I also distressed the brass pieces to go for a worn look. I'm not sure if it will show enough in the pictures. I'm half tempted to use some sort of blacking agent to let it set into the scored areas of the brass.

I am not sure if I want to but I thought about inlaying a worn buffalo nickel on each side of the grip.

I know a guy with some .45 caliber round balls, powder and caps. Just sayin'. In case you wanted to do something about that.

As to giving the brass parts a little age. Get them polished good before assembly and instal. After you shoot the gun a few times, take a water dampened patch, run it up and down the bore a few times getting it nice and black with the fowling, then just wipe down your brass parts. Voila! instant tarnish. You can take a course cloth, like terry, and rub it down. soon you will have a nice used but cared for look. you can take that terry cloth and rub areas where natural wear would occur giving a slight contrast and making it more believable.

Three applications of stain and one of boiled linseed oil later. I put it back together after 24 hours of letting the oil dry, now to let it hang a few days to fully cure.

Looks great! Not sure if you're planning on another coat of BLO but if so you may want to add a small amount of Japan Drier to it really helps harden the finish. I'd also apply some paste wax (i.e., Johnson's etc pure Caranuba/Parafin not auto wax) when its dry and buff it out a bit to bring out a nice satin sheen...

Did you fully assemble it before applying the linseed oil(?), its' much easier to do the stock unassembled, slather it on copiously, let it sit and soak it up for ten fifteen minutes and wipe it down with soft absorbent cloth. Take the cloth outside and burn it. It will self combust if you throw it in the garbage. With that off the shelf linseed oil and no dryers it will not cure unless you put it in direct sunlight and even then it could take some time. If you have some turpentine, a splash of that will act as a dryer, but I would still put it in direct sunlight. After the first coat sets I would lightly rub it down with 0000 steel wool, or a green scotchbrite before the second coat. When satisfied with the number of coats I would again rub it down with the steel wool before applying paste wax.

I put 2 coats of BLO before I assembled it. First coat I applied and let it set for 2 hours, scored it with a green scotch bright pad and applied second coat. It put it together after 4 hours of hanging and it's been hanging assembled ever since.

I guess i'll try some of that paste wax after I inlay the restrike confederate coins I bought.



I'm not gonna lie, only reason I went with Confederate coins is because it will go nicely with my replica Griswold & Gunnison 1851. Ever since I saw Hell On Wheels I've been enamored with the Griswold. Once it's all said and done, I'll have it in my display case with that and my vintage Allen & Thurber Pepperbox.
