Sounds like Dad left a round in the chamber so they're both at fault. Of course they're both paying a terrible price for their stupidity so what can you say other than for it to be a cautionary tale?

Then there is that other rule:

Don't hand a loaded firearm to a newbie who has never handled one before or to a kid so excited about getting it he forgets to clear the action just as you did before handing it to him.

Tragic event. Follow the 10 Commandments of Gun Safety (especially the first few...treat every firearm as if it were loaded, never point a firearm at anything you're not willing to kill/destroy) and this would never have happened.

First rule I taught my son. Treat every gun as if it's loaded. Never accept a gun fro someone with closed chamber / action.

Tragic because it was easily avoided if the people involved had any thought about safe gun handling practices. What a shame.

So tragic. I would put the fault squarely on the father though. First, he handed a loaded weapon over to another person and an inexperienced person at that. Second, he must have known the kid was inexperienced and should have informed him on how to properly handle a firearm, but didn't. The father completely set the kid up for failure and in doing so endangered everyone in the room and house. Considering the lack in safety observation by the father, it's incredible he didn't screw up earlier. I know that sounds harsh and I know everyone makes mistakes, but seriously, this was a huge oversight on the fathers part.

Chances are an 18 yr old in TN is probably not a newb in firearms. Complacency is the biggest killer of all. I've seen ND's and violations of the 4 safety rules from very experienced firearms handlers as well as newbs.
