If they are retired how can they make them come back? I think there is some sort of time period where they can but after that it’s screw you id say.

That's what it is; When you ETS from the Service there is a period in which you could be recalled, but it has to be a job they desperately need to fill and fill it with someone with those same skill sets and rank. For example, you served as a Medical Doctor for five years, specializing in neurology, and the Army hasn't got a neuro surgeon in house or in the works, so they might offer, or make an offer he cannot refuse.
Soldiers that were kicked out (BCD) Medically discharged or Medically Retired, aren't likely to be recalled, but never say never.
I was in the inactive reserve for close to 6 years. That was the term I signed up for, but didn't get to complete. When I was handed separation papers, I asked about it and they told me I can be called up only when something major happens. My term expired just before Desert Storm, not sure if it qualified as "major" event.
I hope if they do this, they pull me out of retirement.

We did a 3 mile run, girls did 2 miles or 1.5 don't remember. My best was just under 20 min. I was 23 at the time.

When they recalled retirees for the surge into Iraq, most were to handle administrative and training needs for the forced getting ready to deploy. No PT or Weapons qual required. They were not eligible for promotion and were not deployed.
In 07, during my last deployment, I met a Colonal that was recalled. 68 years old, training new dentists. He was loving it.
At 54, you don't even do the run.

"Army Civilian Employees" do a lot of this as well as repairs/fabrication/maintenance of everything from Tents to Tanks...99% are Veterans.

Yea, I can still do all of those, but it would require me to release a lot of weakness I've been storing up.

In a sick weird way I miss that. I am going for a stress test today at cardiologist, hope I can pass it. I never had any heart issues, BUT my resting heart rate is extremely low. It's 40 bpm, sometimes dips into 30's. It would be normal for marathon runner, but since I am hardly doing any exercise, doctors are worried. It's great for shooting sports though and maybe that what is causing it. Some people are just born with slow heart rate.

Yeah cause working on a flight deck wouldn't cause ringing in the ears. Having aircraft land on top of your berthing area and an arresting gear cable running threw your berth wouldn't be noisy enough to bother anyone. Watching a pilot drown close aboard, or washing the remains of an ingested shipmate off the deck wouldn't cause PTSD. Nope, don't think I fall into your broad statement..

Absolutely true.
Spent 1.5 years working in the jet shop (heavy engine maintenance) at MacDill - right on the flight line. Can still hear the whine of those J79-17 engines.
Same at Danang - worked props there (???), but trying to sleep with F4s continually taking off was nearly impossible.
Working near moving propellers - sometimes as close as a foot, was terrifying.
Spent many hours at the "test cell" walking around (except directly behind) a "naked" J79 that I'd help repair as it was put though it's paces, including full afterburner.
My bones would vibrate for a full day afterwards.
