Build your own in-wall cabinet?

Anyone built their own in-wall gun cabinet? Welding up a box from plate steel seems straight-forward enough, but I'm curious how you set up the door. Something similar to the ones on a large electrical panel, but far sturdier and more secure?

I'd like to have something upstairs in the bedroom that could hold a couple of rifles and would lock securely enough that I'd feel comfortable on a quick run to the store. Knees are getting old, and the safe is in the basement!

Have you considered beefing up the closet? You could put a fire rated interior door on it with a push button lockset. I'm thinking that you could put heavy gauge steel wire like fencing on the interior wall and then a layer of sheetrock over the top of that. I think that might give you enough security and fireproofing to be adequate. Anybody else got any ideas?

A gun safe only needs to be secure enough to stop an opportunistic thief. Anyone who brings the tools necessary to break into a plain 18ga steel box, will bring whatever tools are necessary for the box they plan on breaking into.

OTOH, if you want to build a fortress, just get some 2x4s, plywood, concrete and rebar, and build your self a form and pour the thing in place.

I like Hidden and Locked!

Yup, while those cabinets do the job for having premade 3" deep ITW skeleton, they really don't "lock" like a safe but more like a school locker and that one barely fits 3 longs. I've had that exact model posted with that link. Good for hiding and light use, maybe no kids at the house..other than that, I know I'd be jimmying that shit open if I was a teenager.
