Enjoying my TACSOL non NFA SBR in 300 B/O. With subs and the GEMTECH ONE can it is just "chuff", chuff".
It was an expensive upper at $1200 TMD. As I examined it and read the regs, it was clear that the two critical critera are:
1. The barrel extension must bring the barrel length to 16".
2. The barrel extension must be pinned and welded/silver soldered/brazed to the rifled portion of the barrel.
I purchased a basic 10.5" upper that had a short Monstrum Handguard. Monstrum also makes a 16" handguard. I bought one of these.
With the 16" handguard mounted, I had my legal length bbl extension. To make it legal, the extension has to be attached to the barrel.
The handguard over the bbl nut, the bbl nut will be drilled and tapped for 4 8-32 aluminum screws. The barrel will also be drilled to allow those screws to lock into it. After assembly, the screw heads will be ground flush with the handguard.
The headless screw is now welded to the handguard with specialized aluminum welding rod.
Now it will be impossible to remove the handguard (barrel extension) or barrel without destructive drilling and cutting.
The end of the short barrel inside the extension is fitted with a GEMTECH quick lock muzzle brake. The suppressor may now be inserted inside the barrel extension and locked on to the quick lock. The oal is 17.5" which is a lot less than putting the can on the end of a conventional 16" bbl.
Shown below is the 300 B/O. The 223 one will look about the same, except the extension will be one piece rather than the TACSOL method of using a short 2 piece handguard with the extension welded/pinned just behind the muzzle of the short barrel. The advantage of the TACSOL method is that the upper can be fitted with a new barrel, but it also costs three times as much as my design.
What do you think ?
