I have a restaurant I service, they just expanded and doubled the size and added a bar . Owner can't find workers , who's gonna go out and work when your getting unemployment plus 600 a week then quarterly stimulus checks. All you have to do is say your afraid to work because of corona, doesn't matter if you quit , fired, or self employed .

Anyone know how much 'income' and unemployed person brings in? Yesterday, I heard up to $57k, but haven't fact checked that yet. If single, couple kids, unemployed, + all available benefits - I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if that figure is accurate. Going to work full time, many of these folks would earn less than $30k.

A person gets full pay on unemplyment instead of the 425 max plus 600 extra, now 300 extra and the LUXURY of refusing work because of covd fear. Its simple economics and common sense. Many people are making more money to stay home than to work. I cant necessarily blame those who could work but don't. Why would you go work for a pay cut? The Cloward-Piven strategy is working to perfection.

Nor really a "pay" cut because they aren't working for it, but I get what you are saying.

To answer, personal pride. I like earning my way through life. I've never collected unemployment, welfare, medicaid, etc. This type of personal pride is something someone either understands or they don't, not really much of a gray area on it (and no I'm not implying anything directed at you).

That said, I don't hold any ill will towards people who lost a job and took unemployment until they found something, bad luck can happen to anyone. I do hold ill will towards people who lost a job and chose not to take a new job just so they could collect unemployment longer, etc. I don't mind helping someone who had a bad break and is actively working towards getting back on their feet, I do mind perpetual leeches that only have a goal to suck blood.

While I understand what you’re saying I disagree with it totally.
Yes you can blame them because the government money train will end someday and hopefully soon. This is cussing horrible inflation and today you could maybe get a job making say $17.00/hour but when the government money runs out maybe it will be $15/hour because others took the better jobs. Who knows

I agree. But personal pride is sadly missing from a huge amount of the population. Qe are full blast into a generation that grew up with the participation trophy mentality. Theres plenty of perpetual leeches they have no qualms about gaming the system in anyway they can. Many of them would stay home even for less than what they're getting right now. The extra government cheese is alike a massive bonus.

You're talking about people who have absolutely no plan beyond next weeks paycheck though. (Whether is from a real job or government cheese) They don't think about how long the money will come, how much it is, what inflation is doing to hurt their buying power etc... all they see is free money today.

We are paying $21-$29/hr depending on position, with a weekend/off-shift differential, OT available, full benefits, 401k, and now a sign on bonus. Several positions open and only one new hire in the last few months. Three years ago these jobs were ~$13-$17/hr.

Hasn't worked for me. We have had upwards of 10% of our workers out for covid related leave at any given time. We frontloaded NY required sick days, and everybody has already used them all. Everyone we have hired in the last year, with only rare exceptions, don't even qualify as useless. I'm focused on retaining the good employees. Hiring isn't going well for anyone I know, in any industry.

That's the biggest argument I've seen so far as to why people are refusing to work: "well then you should actually pay a living wage." Sorry folks, flipping burgers shouldn't pay a living wage. It's a high school pocket money job, not a career like people are turning it into.

He confided in me the other day that he is very worried that he will now not have enough workers to open his doors. We live in a sad state of affairs when business owners are more than willing to pay good money for employment and nobody shows up for interviews.
