Dec 12 (Reuters) - California Governor Gavin Newsom said he plans to use a controversial U.S. Supreme Court ruling on strict abortion curbs in Texas to design a law that would allow private citizens to sue some gun manufacturers, distributors and sellers.

The Supreme Court on Friday left in effect the Texas law that enables private citizens to sue anyone who performs or assists a woman in getting an abortion after about six weeks of pregnancy.


Newsom, a Democrat, said on Saturday his team will work with state Attorney General Rob Bonta and the legislature to draft a proposal in line with the Texas law that would let citizens sue manufacturers, sellers or distributors of assault weapons or ghost gun kits for at least $10,000 per violation.

Define "violation".

If Smith & Wesson sells a gun that blows up the first time you use it, sure, sue them.
If Smith & Wesson tells their employees to take their guns out and shoot people randomly, sure, sue them.

If some crazy, totally unaffiliated with Smith & Wesson, manages to purchase a Smith & Wesson gun (whether "legally" or through other means) and shoots people randomly, too bad, so sad, sucks to be you. It's not gonna make it in court.

One problem, 2A. There is no right to abortion.

Was listening to the arguments for this texas abortion case and the government cited several amendments that so they say establishes it as a right.

The Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution provides a fundamental "right to privacy" that protects a pregnant woman's liberty to choose whether or not to have an abortion.
