Two points about this issue. First, can you imagine the media outcry if a conservative prime minister would ever make such a proposal? Quite a leftist change from the previous mantra “diversity is our strength”?
Second, considering the issue of foreign investment that creates housing, there is a likelihood this could backfire. The new position of Canada will certainly put more upward pressure on the U.S. housing market. Every action tends to have an equal and opposite reaction. It will be interesting to follow this and see where it leads.

I own a small cottage in Canada that I have been spending the summer months at. Nothing extravagant etc. Quite small with one bedroom, one bathroom and an open concept kitchen / living area.
Water, sewer and garbage removal are billed annually as part of the tax bill rather than by usage. Historically we were given a break on the Water, sewage and garbage tax. Because we are seasonal users we were allowed to pay 1/2 of those fees or 6 months worth. Still more than what we used in the 3 months maximum a year that we spend there. Five years ago when the socialist system was searching for more ways to generate income the 1/2 deal was taken away. We now pay a full year for water, sewer and garbage removal. And it is not inexpensive by any means.
Recently we received information that serious consideration was being given to double the property tax for non citizen homeowners. Not just going up but doubling. They reason that you are not there for a full year to spend money in their Country so you will be charged a double tax to generate income for the Govt. This is in spite of the fact that I am not allowed to stay for more than six months!
HST ( harmonized sales tax ) on all purchases is 15%. Prices of petroleum related product and alcohol are Govt. set.
Right now gasoline is over $1.85 / liter and diesel is over $2.40 / liter. Do the math for the price per gallon.
And we are heading down that road like a runaway freight train. ALL ABOARD COMRADE!!

Businesses have a right to make money and buy whatever they want. Jusymt wait in a year there will be plenty of cheap houses because stupid millennials thought houses repaired themselves. If and when the student loan payments start up you’ll find cheap houses.
