Carl Heastie floats raising state sales tax on gas to fund mass transit

Warning that congestion pricing is not a sure bet, Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie on Friday floated another idea to help fund mass transit also certain to infuriate motorists — raising the state sales tax on gasoline.

“It’s an option,” Heastie said at a Crain’s New York breakfast in Midtown.

He later told reporters he was merely citing “an example” of revenue sources other than congestion pricing that could be used for upgrading the subways.

The state’s sales tax on gasoline is currently capped at 8 cents a gallon — or 4 percent on a maximum of $2.

A brew of other local, state and federal taxes brought the total tax per gallon to an average of about 64 cents in 2018, fifth-highest in the nation, according to the American Automobile Association.

The last time the .gov's decided to start taxing the people who have to drive to work, the economy started to tank.

"Mass-transit" is only effective for those who live and work in the same big city.
When gasoline starts getting too expensive, people drive less. Which means less tourism, less "running to the store to buy things" and less frivolous spending. What little frivolous spending occurs starts being done online, rather than at local shops, which further erodes the revenue the State will get. The cost of necessary goods increases (such as food, which isn't taxed) which also reduces the amount of money people have for frivolous spending, again lowering the tax revenue the State generates.

Overall, these idiots WANT to drive New York into Bankruptcy.

I'll give 'em fiddy-cent for the whole State. Providing they lock up Cuomo, or eject him from the State.
