I recently got my concealed carry permit and I'm curious how the veteran carrying parents take their kids to school. It's a slippery slope. Is it better to not carry when dropping them off/picking them up or do you secure your firearm in the car? To me that is almost worse because now you have to transition and the firearm is exposed for a short time. Any suggestions?

I typically pull over and lock my pistol and mag in a lockbox that is secured by a heavy cable to the seat frame rails. Out of sight out of mind imo. I won’t conceal carry it anywhere on school grounds.

I live a block and a half from my kid's school.

When I do go down to pick her up I usually walk and leave my EDC at home.

DO NOT CARRY ON SCHOOL GROUNDS.

It is actually against federal law. To many people are paranoid these days and will jump on the chance to call to police. I live in one of the most gun friendly counties in NYS and I would still leave my pistol at home when i go down to the school. Do not be tempted to do this. Don't even have it in your car locked up[ or not. Don't take the chance. Plan you day accordingly if you have to go pick up your kids. If you get spotted you will get the police on you and you will loose your permit at the very least.

God forbid you got caught carrying on school grounds. You will be treated worse than a child molester or a rapist.

Edit: Don't bring it at all if you're going to and from school. Unfortunately you will have to plan your trips to school around your new lifestyle.

Do not drive on to school grounds including the parking or pick up areas with a gun in your car. I have seen a few people with a secured gun in their car caught, charged, and lose their right to carry because of random issues like a parking lot fender bender, or a pissed off progressive who guesses there may be a gun in the car notifying a resource officer or calling 911 (in some cases because of a bumper sticker, in some cases another parent randomly reports known EDC carriers, in another they noticed them securing their EDC down the block, or even a mother retrieving her gun to defend herself from a beating in the parking lot).

The FGFSZA excemptions for pistol licensees means NOTHING in New Yorkistan, you can and will be arrested if caught, even police officers can still be arrested for carrying on school grounds unless they are only there for official duties, of course the only law abiding people getting arrested in NY are civilian license holders.

Yes but he could have easily avoided it. As firearm owners and many of us permit holders it is no one else's responsibility but our own to know and understand what we can and can't do with our firearms, not what we want of feel we can do.

Not worth it. Don’t do it. Penalties far outweigh any reasonable risk assessment. If you have no choice park off school grounds and leave it locked in car. Walk your kids off property and you’re gtg.

Agreed, the law is the law and you cant beat it just because we "believe" it to be unconstitutional. But the liberal, scaredy cat mentality is annoying as fuck.

The following may (or may not) apply to NYC Areas, but I am referring to Upstate NY Counties only!

Review the Consolidated Laws of New York's Penal code - Article 265
265.06 - Unlawful possession of a weapon upon school grounds - Violation (Applies to Air Guns, BB Guns, etc. only)
265.01 a - Criminal possession of a weapon on school grounds - Class E Felony (All other Firearms / /Revolvers/Pistols/Long Guns/Shotguns, and the like)

With the 2nd one being the subject we are talking about, it applies to simple possession; on grounds (on your person, in your vehicle, etc.), in buildings, and on School Buses. Not worth it! I cringe every time I need to be there without it.

Also good to familiarize yourself with Article 400 as well. Our County (Saratoga) now reviews and tests on both articles as a condition of passing "Unrestricted" issue classes, along with a proficiency test with a firearm (minus .22 cal).

*Note: neither of these articles cover or discuss restrictions. There are opinions as to whether that means your NYS Pistol license therefore cannot be restricted, but conditions of said license do have the ability to be revoked at any time. Tread carefully. Ideally follow the restriction, and do what is needed to become "Unrestricted" per your issuer to be safe.

so whats unlawful .. ?? just having it while not committing a unlawful act ??

this fkin shit is so retarded .. the high school i graduated from .. cant smoke .. ok .. walk 1 foot off the parking lot to the main road and have a smoke

you one fking foot from school grounds .. fkin really ..

man i miss the good old days .. we had our guns in the cars and truck waiting for the end of day bell so we could leave and go hunting ..

i had to take home ec class to make up a credit to graduate .. i fill that cooking class freezer with my first 6 point buck .. we all ate well .. the girls didn't know it was deer .. just the teacher .. she was cool and liked deer too ..

i still drive by that school during hunting seasons to get to where i go hunt .. just a few feet away ..

so fkin retarded our so called leaders are ..

Only half true. It’s “official capacity”. Cops without a seperate permit( most don’t) can only carry on their official capacity anywhere in NYS. That’s the federal law exception. A NYS gun permit for a NYS exempts one from the federal law. The license authority often has told officers who wanted a permit that their badge was their permit. The federal law does not say what is a “license or permit “. Remember the federal courts said that the NYC licensing authority could issue premises permits with an authorization to carry for hunting ( beyond the statue but case law now)

State law allows for it .

Because the carry permit is the exception to the federal law, it’s state law that we have to contend with.

As a retired officer , I carry on a permit now. I am in the same boat when it comes to public schools. Just don’t carry on school grounds. Not even in the car unless you can get prior written permission from the school (which is not going to happen)

You have to plan around it. It sucks and makes no sense but it’s what we have to do
