Check your ammo storage

So i decided today to hit the clubs range and site in the 22's scopes on the old moss and 10/22

empty the mag on the moss .. 7 shot mag (shhhhhhhhh don't tell anyone they were at one time ) ..
runs perfect .. grab a box of ammo and reload the mag .. lock and nope it wont load .. WTF ..
pull that bullet and try again .. nope wont go in the chamber .. pulls bullet and looks it over really
good .. oh great .. now i have a box of .26LR the lead has swelled freeking oxide .. the base of the
lead bullet is bigger then the .22 caseing ..

Is that a Thunderbolt box on the bench? I've had people show me random problems with Thunderbolts over the years. I've shot a lot of rounds with zero problems. There is a legend about them circulating.

Lead doesn't swell when it oxidized. This could be due to manufacturing issue or impact damage like stated above. 22LR is very soft lead it doesn't take much to damage it.

I have a fair amount of .22 stored too. Just have in ammo cans with desiccate packs. Hope that's enough.

I have had nothing but trouble with thunderbolts,I wouldnt take them if the store was giving them away,not worth the headache.

Oxidized lead is a grayish white and wipes off easily. It does not cause lead to swell. Always wash your hands after handling lead oxide.

I shot my .22 and I had Remington golden bullets and out of 20 shots 2 did not go bang. I'm not too happy about it. I bought a few hundred rounds so the failure rate is high and will piss me off.

Problem with the lower end Rems..golden,thunder etc.. So damn dirty, gotta field strip and clean after every 6 rounds

I recently used some old .22 ammo that my dad had, probably from the late 50's. A bunch of federal, western super x, and Remington and didn't have one failure to fire even though some were clearly oxidized.Had a couple fte's since some of that stuff was so dirty. None of it was stored optimally. Just shoved in a Vietnam era .223 ammo can in the basement of multiple houses throughout the years. Maybe the old Marlin 60 is so sloppy, it'l feed/fire anything like a battle worn AK.

I keep all my my ammo in sealing plastic tubs, with some silica gel packets inside to keep the humidity constant. I swap the packets once every month, maybe a little longer depending on how often I open the container. Seems to work well to keep down any corrosion.

I buy thunderbolts with the expectation of malfunctions. Golden Bullets have served me well though.

I've been storing all of my ammo in ammo cans for years. I toss in a couple of desiccant packets if I have them. I keep a couple of thousand reloads for my handguns at all times, and have never had a problem with them, I shoot it when I want to, so there really is not set time on how long it's been around, I'm going to bet none of it is more than a couple years old, but I haven't seen any issues. I store my 22's the same way, it usually gets shot up within a year or so. I have shot up a "BUNCH" of old surplus ammo without any issues.

Now that I think of it, this past summer my Buddy and I shot some old WW2 45acp, that came into the shop from an estate purchase. We shot some of it and saved some just because. Our 1911's ate it up like nothing, AND it was just tossed loosely into a plastic bag.

Vacuum sealed and stored in ammo cans with desicant packet for long term storage. SHTF and you can bury it in cache without a worry. Active ammo in cans with desiccant.
