Complete overhaul of my Ruger American 6.5 CM

Since my recent venture into LRP shooting I quickly realized that I need something more cost effective to shoot frequently. I was thinking about buying another RPR in a smaller caliber but it didn't make much sense to me since I already have a Ruger American that I did some upgrades to; Timney trigger, upgrading/smoothing the bolt, new bolt handle/knob, and putting it in the Magpul stock to use AICS mags. The biggest factor being, if I wanted to sell this rifle to re-coop money it would be a pain in the ass because of the whole NYPD process.

I've decided the best option is to do a massive overhaul. I've sent my rifle to Precision Firearms to have a Krieger 26" cut rifled barrel fit with MTU profile to my American and have my Lancer Viper muzzle brake put on.

For a stock and other option's I've decided to get the following:

• MDT LSS-XL Gen2 Chassis
• MDT Vertical Grip Premier
• MDT Folding Stock Adapter
• Atlas BT10 Bipod
• Catalyst Arms Apex Bag Rider

Already have

• RPR Stock (take off from my 3.38 RPR)
• Arken EP5 5x25x56 FFP scope
• Arken Cantilever mount
• Arken Throw lever
• Arken Flip-up covers
• Send iT Electronic level

I expect my rifle with the new barrel to be back in a month's time, will post pictures as it progresses.

Update: 99% done, just gotta get the barrel and bolt fluted, maybe the barrel cerokoted.

I don't have pictures but before I sent it out, I was shooting 4" groups at 500 yds on a man-sized steel target; it was quite bad for LRP shooting. I'll definitely report back after it's completed, and I get some rounds through it.

Do you reload? 4" groups at 500 yards with factory ammo is pretty good.

Here is the chassis ready to go with the Atlas BT10, my extra Arken EP5 and SendiT electronic level. Eventually i'll get an MDT skeleton buttstock.

By all accounts, Mark does fantastic work. The biggest complaint I've heard is that his time estimates are way off.

I have no doubt it will be a fine and accurate shooter when you get it

Still waiting on my barreled receiver to come back from Mark and he said it wouldn't be ready by the Oaks fall show.

In the meanwhile I purchased this M-Lok quiver. I'm not sure if I like it or maybe it just looks odd because the barrel isn't there.

I was thinking about going with a Hoptic quiver but for only a 2 round holder it's rather expensive. They are nice as I have one on my 338LM RPR.

Any opinions?

if the rebarreling and truing is done right one may put an action on top of a 2x4 and shoot submoa all day. the most important thing about the choice of mounting is that is ergonomically adaptable to you and has good anchoring (bedding) and can be tuned and consistent for harmonics.
my preference is always a warm chassis with a nice aluminum base and ribs as I am used to them.
A ruger american is an unusual and interesting choice of blueprint. i hope it works great for you.

Well again, having anything removed from city permits is a huge hassle and having done some upgrades to my American so it was the logical route for me.

The only thing remaining from stock will be the receiver and the main bolt body.

The last email I received from them was on 11/22 with a promise that it would be completed that week. That email was from his wife Judy.

After not getting tracking information after the end of that week, I sent another three emails that went unanswered.

If it was supposed to be done 11/22, you can probably realistically expect it by February.

You'll be upset and annoyed that it took so long. Until you shoot it.

LOL, 11/22 is WAY past the promise date. I ordered it September 21st. Mark initially told me 30-60 days.

I am familiar with his quality, I have a 458 barrel for my AR he made.

I don't think he has any negative reviews for quality.

One would think that by now he would stop giving unrealistic time estimates for his work.

Just be honest with people and tell them it might take 4-6 months

I wonder if the last response is another lie or if in fact, he didn't have the correction action wrenches. I find it surprising that a gun shop wouldn't have the action wrenches for a common rifle like the Ruger American. On the flip side, not many people are insane like me that decide to build up a Ruger American.

I call BS. They're just making excuses.

Here's what the action wrench looks like. If someone who runs a lathe and a mill cant figure out how to make something like this from stuff in their scrap pile, they should find other work.

Out club has an "in house" gunsmith. Very knowledgeable and amazing work. He's had some people's guns for I would say a year or better. He just doesn't know how to say no. Those who work work him just understand what they're getting into.

Well I got a time frame which kept being pushed further and further back. I think I've been pretty patient.

E-mailed them again and this time Mark replied to the e-mail asking me to call him.

He told me this time that he didn't have the barrel flats or whatever. He explained that he had the wrong action wrenches and that's what delayed the process. As Kev74 said, I find it odd that a gunsmith like him would not already have the proper tooling.

He then proceeded to tell me that it would not be done for another two weeks because he has to go to Shot Show and won't be around.

So, we shall see if it is completed and mailed out in two weeks' time. If it doesn't come by then I think I will have to just cancel my order with him and go another route.

More aggravated that I have so much time invested into the project at this point. I guess I can always just toss the barreled receiver into the MDT stock as is but it's going to be a shit precision shooter with the standard barrel.

I did get a Magpul PRS gen 2 stock in FDE and leg extensions for the BT10.

I'm seriously considering getting MDT Baker Wings for the build as well.
