Concealed Carry and the Medical Emergency

I'm pretty sure this was discussed here once before.

What is your plan if you have a medical emergency while carrying?

The thought had previously crossed my mind but never really ever made any specific plans for it.

On Monday I slipped and fell. Was pretty sure I broke my ankle. Turns out it was just a severe sprain with some torn ligaments.

Long story short, a Trooper that had responded to the 911 call secured my pistol and mags. He took my pistol permit information and told me where I could pick it up. Two of the EMT's that responded in their POV's as well as the property owner were also permit holders (and carrying) but SP can't release it to them because it's not on their permit. He offered to secure it in my work truck but I declined as I knew someone from work would be coming to pick up the truck. He would have released it to my son who is LEO but I couldn't get a hold of him.

Worked out ok. After getting discharged from ER, my wife drove me to the SP where it was taken. Trooper came out to the car and had me sign for it then went and brought it out to me.

If I'm out with my wife I'll just give it to her. She has her permit and all of our pistols are on both permits.
If i'm not out with my wife, but I have my Jeep, I'll have him secure it there til my wife can come pick it up.

First off, concealed carry permit holders are always the most gracious and honest people, so they are forthcoming that they are carrying. We usually just have the local or state PD come out and secure the pistol for the patient. It's never been a problem. My company has a policy that nobody who is a patient is allowed to be carrying a firearm in the ambulance, law enforcement officers included.

As a former EMT, if it were life or death for the patient, I'd secure the weapon myself and have pd meet at hospital.

In my case, PD was the 3rd unit to arrive.

I hope he says yes. Automatic done deal with DOH and the feds for that company.

I was going to comment the same thing ..

99.9% if not more .. good guys have it in a holster .. it's a really good indication .. bad guy won't spend the $$$ on one , need it for drugs

Unless it a female .. you might find a 22 derringer between her boobs .. i know one lol

It's the gun's fault. Everytown will just add it to the gun stats.

The torn ligaments will probably take at least as long to heal as a fracture. Not so sure about being lucky though. When I fell, I rolled down a hill. Apparently through a patch of poison ivy. .. to which I am highly allergic. So yeah. Good times.

But I have to say that, yes, SP was very nice and professional. As were both ems crews.

I could have gotten a note from Dr. Sommeroff, but my employer was nice enough to let me come work in the office for the few weeks I'll be on very limited duty.

VERY LITTLE of what we actually do is a life and death emergency. Police go on most of our calls out of their own protocol and if they aren’t there and we need them they get there real quick. We don’t take live firearms, secured or otherwise in the back of an ambulance, period.
