Consumers can now freeze their credit for free under a new federal law.


A credit freeze restricts access to your credit file, essentially halting anyone from opening any new credit in your name. The rules used to vary by state, but previously it could cost up to $10 to put a freeze in place. That fee often had to be paid again when someone wanted to unfreeze it for any legitimate uses.

Nice, I can stop paying this fee each time. Finally.

Despite the fee, I was still paying it because it's worth it. It's the best thing you can do to thwart someone from ruining your credit. I never totally lift my freezes, only temporarily.

You should always freeze your credit, and try to get a PIN with the IRS to avoid people filing in your name.

I will shortly be locking down all family members' credit scores.

It's beyond stupid this was even a cost until now. As somebody wrote I saw elsewhere it would be like your bank charging you to have a password put on your online account.
