Do you like liners on your fixed blades

The title says it all, do you guys like the look of liners on your fixed blade knives? I'm looking at making my first knife. It's going to be O1 with ziricote scales. It will primarily be used as a hunting and meat processing knife. I was thinking King about adding some orange or light colored liners.

Depends on the knife, but I suppose I like the look the look of them . Especially so on tangs with fancy scroll and filework and such; just makes that look 'right'. On some knives the liner kind of also beefs up the handle slightly compared to models from the same maker without them. With rather large hands I tend to prefer that.

I know it's off topic a little, but how much 'making' are we talking here ? I know we've talked before where you've expressed an interest in potentially learning blacksmithing/forging/blademaking/whatever. Have you decided to really take that on ?

I've put together some knives and ground/filed scales into shape before, but I guess I'd consider myself as having mounted and made a handle, and not so much made a knife, because I was using pre-made and at least semi-sharpened blades that came with appropriate pins and all.

Yeah, they are pretty similar. Their composition is a little different, and you harden them a little different, but their final characteristics are similar. O1 is a little easier to find in precision ground, I think. I think my wife is going to get it from Amazon for my Birthday.

I want to get a forge and anvil, but I'm not there yet. I'll be starting with stock removal. Basically, I'll buy a metal bar the correct thickness, draw the knife outline, and cut/grind it out. I've got an angle grinder, slow speed bench grinder, and a 4x36" belt sander (it should be enough to get started). I've got all the woodworking tools needed to make handles. I've got what I need to get started, although the belt sander will have to be upgraded sooner than later if I actually enjoy making knives.

Looks like he's doing an edge quench. It's a heat treating method that hardens the blade but leaves a more flexible spine.

Haven't totally decided. I may try to do that part myself. Or, I may send it out to have it done. The guy in the video just hardened the blade.

Buy enough steel to make six knives, you will get a fairly decent one by the sixth one. This advice from several good knife books. Heat treating instructions will come with your steel from the makers. Sell the other five here. Keep us posted with pictures.

O1 is very sensitive to the heat treat. I've made a few from it, all shaping work was forging and filing, it was hit and miss using just my eye for color and time in heat for tempering. This was pre-internet so I was kind of on my own. I bet there is a ton of heat treat information for O1 out there now.
