Dropping the Slide on a 1911

Before I originally purchased my first 1911, I read so much about dropping the slide on a 1911 with an empty chamber that my head was spinning from all of the different opinions.

Good video. I had never heard not to drop the slide, and now if I do, I won't listen.

Didn't need to watch the video. I'm sure a slide or two were dropped during WWII with nothing in the chamber and came out just fine. Figuratively and literally.

If it was that fragile it would not have survived 100+ years as one of the most popular firearms.

I'm sure there are guns out there that are that fragile, if you have one you should recognize it as a terrible design and replace it, not treat all guns like they are that fragile.

If there is a gun that I cannot dry fire or drop the slide whenever I want and as often as I want then
I don't want that gun.

A lot of Rim fires will chew themselves up if you dry fire them

And some older firearms, I don't love dry firing my 1967 hi power, although I'm sure it's fine

Yes certain model shouldn't be dry fired because with out a cartriage the pin goes past the bolt face and can hit the barrel potentially causeing damage, 10/22, CZ, Aunschutz are three that i know of that the bolt face is longer then the pin and can be dry fired without damage. Thier of course may be others.

Savage, and Marlins it's not recomended.

Now he mentions duty guns, My only thought is on a tight fitting custom gun would dropping the slide cause premature wear on lugs ect. I can see why somone wouldn't want to loose that tight hand fitting with gratuitous slide drops.

Yes, last I checked that is the general rule.

Parkinsons? they grab and squeeze stuff to reduce or stop the tremors

Same for the M-16s, inspection arms done everyday by platoons which was dropping the bolt on an empty chamber on command after viewing that it was indeed empty, then dry firing. We do this over and over until it sounded as one.
