Most agencies prohibit carrying on duty. I know several that did, regardless. When we'd respond to a prison, we were supposed to turn in cell phones, knives, etc. Nope. Didn't bring it to work today.

When I had to go to the hospital a few years ago, the EMTs had to call for PD to come secure my pistol. They wouldn't take me to the hospital with it.

Question why the police didn't check this guy before he was put in the ambulance but that's not normal practice anyway

Unfortunately with the way the city is right now we can call for NYPD for backup but they give no ETA. We can't wait on scene for an extended period of time waiting for PD to eventually show up. So in the end, we just end up transporting without them if the EDP is exhibiting no violent tendencies. Mainly this is because dispatch and Lieutenants will get on us about extended on-scene times.

Also, most members will not call for PD if they are non-violent just because we already know dispatch will advise us PD does not give ETAs.

I'm sure there will be a new order coming down from the FDNY brass to change this practice.

Just a small town volley EMT here but we sometimes end up dealing with patients that probably should have just ridden in the back of a cruiser.

BUT they're probably not able to protect themselves so they go to the hospital

A diabetic can present as being intoxicated by alcohol or drugs, as can a head injury. Either of those, if left untreated, can result in a very bad day for the patient. If there's even a passing thought that there may be something more to it that alcohol, they'll call EMS.
