President Donald Trump has signed the Rapid DNA Act into law which means the police can routinely take DNA samples from people who are arrested but not yet convicted of a crime.

The law, which was signed in 2017 and comes into effect this year, will require several states to connect Rapid DNA machines to Codis – the national DNA database controlled by the FBI.

These machines, which are portable and about the same size as a desktop printer, are expected to become as routine a process as taking fingerprints.

But John W. Whitehead from The Rutherford Institute believes it is a sinister development which will make everyone a suspect.

This was always inevitable. And for the record I do not like it.

A few decades from now the amount of forensic tools that will catch people will make getting away with any significant crime outrageously difficult. Pattern recognition/machine learning will be applied to tease out patterns in noise including gait recognition, facial recognition, travel patterns, internet behavior, it will be largely like minority report.

"Hmm, looks like somebody was murdered here last night, let's run a quick analysis on any anomalies. Ah yes we see according to cell records these three people are rarely in this area at this time, let's look further into that. Yep, two of them check out based on internet patterns, but this one guy's internet activity shows unusual behavior before and after [completely unrelated to a crime, btw, just unusual and out of his norm], let's bring him in for questioning. When we go over to ask him about this we'll be sure to run his reaction through our system so that even if he refuses to answer questions we can pick up with 97% accuracy whether he's marked as lying, which will be enough for a warrant and then we can complete the investigation."

Then the guy is brought in. He refuses to answer any questions, but that's no worry because a new implement is attached to his head that detects brain activity without speaking; basically a high end lie detector (Does Anyone Want to Hear My Internal Voice? Anyone?).
