So took my few months old rifle out to the range yesterday, didn't get a round off due to not remembering how to load the compmag and rookie move of trying to manually feed a round into the chamber like I can with my pistols, ended up with a shell stuck up in the top of the upper somewhere that I couldn't extract with tools on hand at the range, plus the black flies were eating me alive & didn't have bug juice with me.
Today, after watching the compmag videos again & practicing with the lower separated, headed back to the range and had fun sending a couple of boxes down range. I just have iron sights so far. At 25 yards freehand I was all over, I'm right handed and my left shoulder needs to be replaced due to arthritis so using my left arm to try to steady my barrel I realized is not going to work out too well. I did hit the target 6 out of 10 shots, one pure luck touched the bullseye. Next shots I braced myself against the back of my truck and hit the targets most of the time.
Anyone else using the compmag find it a bit narrow inside? When trying to unload via the loading port the rounds get hung up in the upper part of the mag and don't slide down to be emptied from the mag. Maybe it needs some breaking in or I need to take it off and file it down inside a little bit.
Then I backed up to 50 yards where there is a bench, so rested the bottom of the mag on the bench, flipped to the smaller aperture on the rear sight, and thought I was doing great, but only hit paper in 1 of 20 shots. May have been shooting high but I need a spotter I guess to try sighting it in. I do plan on getting an optic of some sort for longer range shooting, but for now don't want to part with the money & I have a lot to learn & feel I should learn how to shoot with what I have.
Related to my first paragraph screw up, the round that I dug out of the upper got jammed in at some point (I must have let the bolt spring forward against it) so that it dented the shoulder of the brass. It does go in & falls out of the chamber easily so it's not distorted too bad, but is it safe to shoot? If not, how can I dispose of it?
I need more ammo. Looking forward to my next build. Next up is featureless.
