Flying with a nys compliant AR-15

My sister in law is funding my brothers rifle build as a christmas gift. I have advised him to go with the tier5 MBC so it is not semi auto and therefore compliant.

My brother will be visiting friends in Louisiana for thanksgiving and asked me about flying the rifle down there.

I have never flown with a rifle and warned him that an ignorant tsa agent may cost him his rifle and lead to legal fees.

Has anyone here ever checked a rifle for a flight from albany? Does anyone have any input on the subject?

The sheriff looked at my permit and ran my name. Nothing else went down.

If you are worried ship the lower and check the upper....or visa versa. Or ship the whole gun.

By carry you mean check the bag right? It's my understanding you can't carry on any gun parts or ammo

Check it, declare it, make sure the magazines are empty, put ammo in stock ammo box, put it in a hard locking case, lock it. It's not necessary but I always put a trigger lock, etc, on.

Yeah check it.

You can not have ANY gun parts in the cabin with you. (I had trouble with a bcg once. They made me check it)

Some people carry on optics.....but i am not sure. I would not.

in the same respect that a 1903 springfield is semi-auto after you install the conversion kit. yes.

Incorrect. You can ship a firearm to yourself across state lines without a FFL. You cannot transfer ownership of a firearm across state lines without a FFL.

TSA doesn't enforce NYS laws.

TSA doesn't enforce NYS laws.

They're not supposed to. But they routinely pull people aside and hand them over to the appropriate law-enforcement agencies in various airports (NYC in particular).

DO NOT SHIP TO AN FFL! if you do you may not get it as they may not know NY law and may not transfer your own gun to you. it happened to a friend that shipped his pistol to an ffl in another state. by law the ffl could not give him , his own gun, because you can not transfer pistols across state lines to an out of state resident!

DO NOT OVER THINK THIS. if it is legal. take it with you to the airport. IF you are uncomfortable with having a rifle atthe airport for any reason SHIP IT TO YOURSELF. you can send ut to your hotel....or pick it up at a local post office.....(just call the PO you are sending it to and tell them you are shipping it to yourself and have them hold it for you. i have done this all over the world)
