Found this at the range today

They are 7.62x39 brass casings. At first I thought maybe someone screwed up and fired them from a 7.62x51/ .308 Winchester chamber but after measuring them I cannot be so sure. The mouth measures .433 the .308 Winchester chamber would be .454 at that length. I can imagine someone was wildcatting but, I cannot see someone fireforming their brass and leaving it out there so I am at a loss.

Could be Nagant revolver. It's a unique design. The case moves forward and creates a seal. Bullet sits below case mouth.

Also it cannot be fired a 308 or 30-06 etc... or the base will bulged above the web and perhaps split.
Who knows maybe they fired this out of a 30-40 krag, 303 british, etc...
Or it could be a short chambered version of the 40-65 or 40-70.

What is the diameter at the base of the web and a tad above the web .443-.445 or more?

I was hoping you would chime in, being the resident expert on wildcat rounds. I will measure the web this morning and get back to this post. They look like they were fire formed, I still am at a loss on from what.

Thanks. It smells like a wildcat of some sort because if the case is stamped 7.62x39 then the base has been resized down 10 thousands.
Possibly a 41 magnum in long version or something very similar, I am guessing.

Wildcatting has many levels:

Beginner - Buy a barrel or rifle in a chamber that has not been commercially accepted but you can easily find barrels, reamers, dies and bullets
and can easily make brass from other cases. Lets say the 9x25 to shoot 125gr 9mm bullets at rifle speeds using 10mm cases as the donor to
form the brass.

Senior - You use existing reamers and dies to make variations of a cartrige. This might require cutting a chamber and/or dies and also
cutting or trimming brass from some cases. You might develop your own charges based on data from similar cartridges for the same
capacity, caliber and bullets.

Obsessed - you might make your own proprietary design from scratch. This might require radical alterations to brass and design
new reamers and dies that might be custom ordered. This will require calculations and blueprints to make sure it is safe and in paper
does everything you want. Then do careful development plan and testing.

Insane - you might design a new case that needs a new case development from scratch. This might require the design of a new action
and or bolts and rifle. this will require new reamers, dies and tooling. Some people might even design a totally new bullet and
custom order specific caliber, rifling and bullets. At this point you are most likely broke and your wife probably left you but
you continue ahead with the project. You get a letter from the ATF saying that your caliber exceeds the limits of what is allowed
for civilian use and suggest you properly discard the 30mm GAU-8 or 20mm Vulcan cases you intended to use as donors for the wildcat.
You are torn because psychiatric medication is expensive and will not allow you to buy many bullets at $50 / each.

I don't reload. My round fav is 223 - 22-250 for preds, If I had a choice I would probably lower the FPS for accuracy on preds.

you would love the 223-6.8 wildcat. It repilcates the 22-250 with less powder and cheaper brass. 80gr Amax @ 3,000 fps from a 20" barrel.
55gr will be in the 3,800 fps too.
