G23 old style questions

My dad is a police officer and they are making him get a new gun. I know not a bad thing. They are using G23 hen 4's. They made him buy the last gun, but not this one. It's an old style glock 23. I'm not a glock guy so I don't know too much about them. They told him they were forced to do it because they can no longer get parts to repair the old glock. I want to guess and say his glock is 15 years old. I could be off either direction in a few years. Does this sound right to you guys? If so what parts should he buy to keep the old glock running. I know not much goes wrong with them, but I'm sure a few springs or something. Also how would I know what generation it is. I'm sure I could look it up by serial number right? Thanks.

Absolutely not true. I have a gen 2 (1988-1998?) that is one i regularly use. I have no issues getting parts from Glock. Wikipedia has a good/quick descriptions of Gens 2 to 4.

Thinking about it a bit more, and not being a police armorer, perhaps its the slide they cant get? Not sure how frequently that would be a concern though.

As for parts, i keep a spare recoil spring assembly and that's about it. I don't get crazy stocking an at home Armory since i can call Glock and get parts ordered.

Im guessing that Glock offered his dept a nice deal on new pistols, thus the change.

It would have to be a gen 2 or 3 but the date that you have me. He was issued it right on the boarder of that. Thanks for that.

I figured something was up with that and it did not seem right to me. I figure they are going to the gen 4 because the interchangeable back straps. I also figure glock is coming out with the gen 5 and looking to liquidate the gen 4.

They wanted my dad to start carrying it without shooting one round through it. I thought that was absurd and so did he. He spoke up and said um no. Im not carrying it without shooting it.

Here's a picture of the Glock generations (full size frame. A G23 is just a smaller frame)

Note the change of the stippling & finger grooves on the frame as they progressed.

The Gen 4's have a few differences: grips were made smaller with optional of back strap to increase the grip for larger hands. ambidextrous extend mag release, dual recoil spring.
Gen 4 slide/ frames are not inter-changeable with other Gen's.

I don't know that they are selling them. The glock in question is owned by each officer individually. For some reason they made the police officers buy they when they were issued.

I'll have to take another look at his, but I think it has finger grooves so not might be a gen 3. I'll talk with my dad and see if he wants to sell it.
I think he should since he does not carry an off duty gun and feel he should have one. I think he should buy a compact 9 mm glock. I'll keep you posted. He does not make decisions fast though.
