Here is a little sheet that I'm using to learn how to garden better. An ounce of prevention equals a pound of cure, so I'll try and update or others can add to as they see fit. Any age old wisdom that could be shared would be great. While soil meters, test kits, special containers, wonder chemicals are great once you run out there is no match for some good horse sense.
Just some of my plans and info that's been passed to me.
- I've been using coffee grounds and banana peels in my containers, seems to work well.
- I am Planning on doing potatoes in a container then as they sprout, just adding more soil to cover, a friend uses this method and said he gets great yields.
- I've seen some people making container bags out of burlap rolls sewing them up.
- I also saw a guy using what look like 1 gal plastic garbage bag liners as containers to grow carrots might try something like that, just without plastic.
YMMV haven't tried the tater thingie, but it looks promising. Planning on doing more in containers than raised beds, just in case we get sever weather they can be move in, reduce the possibility of loss.
This sheet/plan is to get me started right, not for the maintenance. I'll be putting my fungus/insect cheat sheet up once i get it compiled.
I was poking around the inter-webs for more starting info and found numerous references to using 3% H2O2 and soaking the seeds for 30 min to scarify the seed hull for easier germination. I haven't tried it yet since I'm using store seeds(and didn't know about this before i started). I might try on my 2nd germination this week with some of my own seeds and see if it makes any difference.
Now to match what I'm growing with some good canning recipes.
UPDATE:
I made some bags using thick weed fabric: it helps to do the sewing inside out.
1) cut fabric to make planter as big as needed circumference calculator
2) form into circle fold fabric a couple times to make a 1/2"-1" seam and sew.
3)fold over top lip 2-3 times making 1/2-1" seam and sew that also.
4) with top down, gather material and tie with twine making a 1-2" ball at bottom.
5) turn right side out, use 3"-6" piece of cardboard as long as the initial piece of fabric (minus the what the seam took up) place in bottom forming circle (adds support)
It took less than 10 minutes per planter bag. Hope this helps someone only down side is they won't be very stable to move without something under it for support.
Edited the cheat sheet for root depth, helped me plan what to raise in containers, raised beds or in window boxes. Also for raised beds and general in ground planting here is a spacing chart i forgot to include
