Glock, Jericho or 1911?

Hey folks, it's been a while. Just moved a month and a half ago so it's been a busy summer. Now that it's a bit less crazy, the itch for a new gun is taking hold. I've got three possible choices on the immediate radar. I've got a couple others that require incentives from the manufacturer, so those are on the back burner. The choices are in no particular order:

My 2nd Glock 43. I love the one i have now, i shoot it great, and it's my EDC with a crimson trace laser. The second one will be sent out to Wilson Combat to be customized. I already have a pistol light that i got for less than half price for a G43 and one of the Glocks would get the light and be the around the house gun... Bears and all around here. Cost: $424 out the door

Choice 2: IWI Jericho. 9mm. Steel frame. Think Magnum Research Baby Eagle but with frame mounted safety as opposed to slide mounted. This one is actually made by IWI whereas the Baby Eagle is outsourced. I've heard they shoot beautifully, I've felt the trigger and it's smoooth, and it's just badass looking gun. Cost: $587

Choice 3: Would be my first 1911. Not a true 1911 some would say, but the Sprinfield EMP4 with cocobolo grips. What a beautiful gun. I know some folks are all FUSA cuz of a decision they made a while back, but i feel that was misinterpreted. Maybe not, but i still love this gun. Cost: $920 or so.

I voted for the 1911 I try to avoid duplication of arms in favor of variety. Kinda bugs me that I have 2 5.56 ARs and 2 9mm polymer striker guns actually. The Jericho is kinda of a nonsensical pistol to me. It's not a target pistol but it has the size and weight of one and I am also strongly biased against DA/SA pistols with a manual safety and especially those with no decocker function as I belive such nullifies the purpose of that action. If the Jericho appeals I think the CZ offerings would better suit you. Also if you simply want a full size all steel 9mm, and seeing as you are a Wilson Combat fan, may I suggest you consider the Wilson Combat Brigadier Tactical? Its a heavily customized Beretta M92. The decocker G model type naturally.
Otherwise I think we all need a 1911 in the collection at some point. I'm leaning towards a 10mm model myself.

A customized gun sounds cool (even if it IS a Glock LOLz), but Glock 43 for bears? You're a braver man than I. (or is it to kneecap the person with you so you can get away?)

I have a Ruger SR1911 .45 ACP (and just won an auction for same model in 10mm!) and like it. Would cost less than the Springfield, not sure how set you are on that particular model.

Someday I'll have the money to get a nice Dan Wesson or Wilson Combat 1911 in 9mm.. but that's a ways out.

The Jericho looks interesting, haven't heard much about it.

As per PODmonkeys response , i can agree to disagree. It all depends on what you're doing, are you collecting guns or are you protecting yourself with guns?

If you are protecting yourself with guns i prefer to keep things as basic as possible, push button mag release, sights, triggers you get the point. I understand well if you train on everything you will be solid; that is true but i like consistency because everyone gets complacent with their firearm of choice. They will use all of them and then slowly some will be left in the back of the safe and never be touched. I myself and guilty for that with my Springfield Mil Spec operator 1911.

So in my opinion figure out what you want to do with your guns first.

I totally agree with the variety aspect of acquiring firearms, so I've got DAO's, DA/SA's, striker fire, hammer fire from lots of different manufacturers. I don't have that 1911 yet tho. My dream Wilson Combat would be the EDC X9. Not happening any time soon though. The Jericho would totally be a novelty, but that's part of having guns isn't it? Love CZ's and a Shadow 2 may be in my future, but that's gotta wait too. Thanks for the vote.

The Glock would be for protection so it would likely be used for informal double tap competitions as well. The 1911 would be for occasional carry and also some competitive use. The Jericho would be just to have a fun range gun.

I know. 9mm for bears is not ideal, but other than 22lr that's all i have pistol wise and it'll be that way for a while until i get my first revolver. I don't want to have a whole bunch of different caliber guns. I like to keep it simple. Besides, if i get mauled or killed by a bear whilst packing, it was my time to go i guess. I lol'd with the capping comment. Didn't think of that. Pretty set on the Springfield as it's just slightly decreased in overall size compared to a .45 ACP. Thanks for the input.

Totally go with the 1911 then. Without question in this case.

You'll be fine when using it for small black bear here in NY and can probably put more rounds on target with it than you could with a big bore revolver which will make you more effective.

I'm also a believer in simplicity if you aren't a collector. More than once when distracted at the range I pulled on the trigger of my 1911 that I used to own with the safety on.

When you use the same gun or similar type gun in a combat situation, muscle memory takes over when you have tunnel vision or injured.

Someone once said in another gun forum that carry rotation is just as bad as a woman deciding what shoes to wear. I agree.

That's what I've seen. Sure a 500 or 454 would be great, but i ain't lugging that thing around in the woods and even if i did, drawing it would be nearly impossible to do in a big hurry. I read an article where 9mm's were effective at stopping bears 97% of the time and the one time it wasn't, the shooter likely didn't get rounds on target. Like you said, i should be good for the little guys we have around here.

Is it the one with the bobbed grip? I would definitely opt for that one if they had it with the wood grips. It is a sweet gun. Looks and feel wise.

I feel the same way.. I too have neglected to click a safety off at the range, and that's why I only carry striker-fired (no safety) pistols for CCW - A Shield 99% of the time, and if I can ever get 10-round mags, my 2.0 Compact in the winter. (has a TLR7 light on it, no light on Shield)

Do they even make 10 round mags for the 2.0 compact? I like that gun, but nobody has one around here and finding them online with ten rounders is challenging.

Call Woollcott guns. They will allow you to ship an over capacity mag to them and pin it at 10 rounds for $15.00 per mag. I was looking for a sig 320 and they were hard to come by that time and they offered to do this for me.

No factory 10-rounders for 2.0 Compact, and I've e-mailed S&W twice. My FFL in Pulaski (Sharpshooters) epoxied the two mags it came with, but I would like more than two mags to practice with... and I'd prefer not to use an epoxied mag for carry. I worry about reliability. And liability.

@Willjr75 There's no such thing as muscle memory (muscles don't have the ability to think/process), What you're speaking of is Malignant Short term memory, retaining a constant awareness of that small amount of information in repetition. Just busting balls, speaking of short term memory retention sounds better than muscle memory when explaining the why.

It depends on which one i get. The Glock would be for carrying around the house and woods just in case. The Jericho a range toy and the 1911 perhaps a carry piece sometimes and maybe some informal competition.

I am a 1911 guy I was raised on them and a majority of my handguns are 1911s. A majority of my carry guns are 1911s or have 1911 style controls. I do own revolvers and other autos (no Glocks though). I do have a couple of striker fired handguns and revolvers. If your heart is set on getting a 1911 when you can afford it do it.

As a kid I wanted a Nylon 66. Apache black with the chrome action and barrel. It was the one gun I focused on for a long time. I never asked for one because I already had a 22 and there were 4 kids in the house. After I went in the Army I forgot about it for the longest time. For the past 5 or so years I have been thinking about the gun and have seen quite a few for sale and while they were priced several times more than they were when I was a kid I still could have afforded to buy them but, I never did. My fear is my childhood memory of how awesome the nylon 66 was will end up being a myth and the gun will be a disappointment because of my expectations are so high.

Moral of the story buy what you want when you want it. One day before I die, I will buy an Apache Black nylon 66, then again I may not. I have so many others that I only look to that gun as a fond childhood memory of reading my Dad's Guns & Ammo magazines every month.

You've been saving for a 1911. keep saving and get it .... in whatever caliber you fancy. If you settle for less you'll be starting from scratch, saving all over again. You will not loose the itch for a 1911.

Saw a Nylon 66 Apache Black today at the Clayton gunshow. 650 dollars, it was in great shape. I didn't buy it, was tempted but decided not to do it.
