Got a good dressing down yesterday

Went out to Wolcott guns last night with a buddy to shoot his new M4 and my new 15-22 to sight in a new red dot that I got for it. Well, I was done shooting, turned around to put the gun in the case and the case wasn't right behind me where I left it. Looked over in the other corner and there was a case that looked just like mine so I went over (gun in hand) and realized it wasn't mine. By that time, one of the guys spotted my idiocy on the screen, came in and let me have it. Totally deserved it. Thing is I know better and was really mad at myself for being "that asshole". In my defense, there was a guy who put his double case right over top of mine so i couldn't even see it, which threw me off and made me have my der moment.

At least you understand your mistake. Most people would argue with the RO. Those are the ones you have to watch out for.

Neither. Although the guy who covered up my case with his, muzzled just about everyone as he was swapping between his ar and whatever else he had in his case... behind the firing line.

Wolcott's is nice, I'm surprised anyone even said anything. Half the time it seems like no one is supervising anyways. Also, it's not like they have a lot of space for cases and stuff, so to swap guns you have to go behind you to the table anyways.

I just keep my muzzle pointed straight up, holding by the handguard, whenever I need to maneuver.

Even when I used to being to a range, that was never a rule. That's why I read it the first time and thought I missed something like @GOPerfect?

And instead of politely letting you know of your mistake, you got "dressed down?"

That would be my last visit.

Easy for you to say Darth when you have the holy grail of private property to shoot on. Well if the property weren't in New Yorkistan it'd be the holy grail. It does seem a fussy rule though. It is what it is.

Organized ranges are a much different animal than a day of shooting with your buds at the local pit. I hate organized ranges but they are a necessary evil if that's all that's available.

No not lame at all. It's just what comes with the territory of public ranges. There are just too many assholes that don't know what they're doing. In America if one asshole ruins it they ruin it for everyone.

I see the confusion as to someone, myself included, wondering why you were reprimanded. That is often quite okay at ranges I go to since the gun-racks are behind the firing line at some of them and that is where you are supposed to place uncased rifles not in use at the moment. Each range has its own rules.

That's exactly how I was holding it. I was probably milling about just a tad too long trying to locate my case. They are great guys there and they seem to run a tight ship on the range which it's a good thing when you think about it really.

Yes he could've been a bit less pricky about it, but I was in the wrong. They have signs in like three places saying guns must be cased or holstered behind the line. Whoops.

Wolcott is one of the nicer places to go; I just hate other people's rules. One of the biggest reasons we bought land, my land, my rules.

I shoot however I want too.

I've only shot at two indoor ranges, they each seem to do it differently. One has a cable driven target system and the other is just target frames in front of the bullet trap at 25 yards, no adjusting distance. The range with the targets fixed at 25 yards was way more strict in its rules then the one with individual cable driven targets and understandably so. With the fixed target range, everyone shot for ten minutes at a time and then once time had elapsed and last rounds were fired, we all had to put chamber flags in the guns, step back behind the firing line and wait for the RO to check each gun for chamber flags. Then we were given the OK to go down range and change targets. The lanes all had shelving under the main shooting table for putting bags and cases. At the other range with the cable target system, you fired at will, not timed shooting sessions, no line to step back behind, no chamber flags. Also no area in your booth to put range bags or cases so those had to got against the wall behind you. The RO's always wanted you to, leave your weapon at the shooting lane and bring your case(s) to the lane to place your weapon in.

Yeah, then I'd say don't worry about it, that's not a big deal. They probably want to run a tight ship since I hear horror stories from Niagara Falls gun range. (Never been there though)

And it went downhill. I actually got behind cover.

Weather a rule or not all firearms should be cased and uncased on the firing line with muzzles pointing down range! You open the case and the muzzle is not pointing down range close it an turn it around. This should be done at a public range or in your backyard! Just my 2 cents!!
