Gov. Hochul issues plan to implement term limits for elected state officials

ALBANY N.Y. (WENY) - Governor Kathy Hochul announced today a plan to implement term limits for the positions of Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, and Comptroller

The governor will introduce a constitutional amendment to set limits of two consecutive terms for statewide elected officials.

Hochul will also propose legislation to impose a ban on earned outside income for the same statewide elected officials, with an exception for academic positions that must receive ethics board approval.

She will also propose a ban on outside income for statewide elected officials while serving in office.

The governor says the proposals are intended to raise accountability and trust at all levels of state government.

I do support term limits, but something is awry coming from a democrat.

The eagerness to alter the NY constitution should be the bigger concern.

I believe the process is similar to amending the US Constitution. Going to have to research that one a bit. It is probably hidden in the public health law.

Please contact her and say "Why bother with the hassle of a constitutional amendment. We gave away our responsibilities of the legislature to the Governor's Office so just tell her to "mandate" it.

If you think "she" has the authority to tell me what I can and can't do, then I think she has the authority to tell you what you can and can't do.

• The current constitution has been amended over 204 times. Since 1996, 17 constitutional amendments have been adopted.[2]
• The most recent amendments to the New York Constitution, of which there were two, were approved by voters in 2021.
• New York does not feature a process for initiated constitutional amendments. Thus, amendments in New York can be put on the ballot through referral by the legislature or by a constitutional convention.

Neither do I. It’s a plan to get someone on there that will allow them to raid the NYS Zoe soon find for their pet projects. DaNapoli has not allowed this.
It won’t change anything. You’ll just get less qualified assholes in these positions and it will actually cost us more money. These people get lifetime benefits so we will be paying salaries and life time benefits. Also now that there is no outside income I’m sure they will want raises. It sounds good on the surface, but o e thing is for sure is the tax payers will lose in the end.

- lifetime ban on ANY further elected positions.
- 10 year ban on government appointments after holding office
- ban on holding stock with any company doing business with the government while in office - extends to immediate family also
- 10 year ban on accepting employment or volunteering for any government contractor after holding office
- 10 year ban on lobbying after holding office
- no immunity for acts or omissions while in office

Lifetime ban on further elected positions sounds like they are scared Cuomo will come back.
I get the short term ban on appointments since I think a lot of dirty deeds get done, but 10 years is too long.
The ban on stocks I get as that is a conflict of interest. What’s immediate family mean?
10 year ban on employment is too long. I have a 3 year ban for my position. Also how can they tell you who you can and can’t volunteer for?
I don’t think politicians should have immunity anyway. I think we should be able to hold them personally liable for their actions, but that’s a double-edged sword and a slippery slope. Trump would be screwed by the court of public opinion.

I think this is all a stunt to keep Cuomo from running again. I think she’s scared to death of him and there are many that support him and think this was all politics.

As for FUAC, - now that everyone is backing off charging him, I predict he will absolutely run for statewide office again, - or perhaps NYC mayor once Eric Adams is proven to be an even worse cluster fuck than DeBlasio. FUAC is sick enough mentally to actually believe that the people of NYS want him, - hell that they actually NEED him.
